Here’s an antidote to claims by the right that New Labour poisoned the well of political news by introducing ‘spin’. It seems these tactics go back at least to the Wars of the Roses, and were very popular with Margaret Thatcher, whose government ensured that its supporters got to own the major newspapers, and who actually made sure a dissenting TV station was closed down.
