London Homelessness Soars In First Three Months of Benefit Cap

Last Updated: September 9, 2013By

So 4,230 households have become homeless, in London, due to the Benefit Cap. The article states that local authorities in London have accepted that they owe these families a main homelessness duty – how much more money does that mean they have to spend on these families than they were before April this year?
If we knew that, we would be able to show the true cost of this policy. Too many people think this pointless Coalition government is bringing spending under control when in fact it is making matters worse.

but its nothing to do with tory policies they say they couldn’t run a p*ss up in a brewery taking us down when they and the bankers should be paying for it – not the poor.

Mike, I can tell you that BBC London News did an item earlier this year in relation to Westminster Council. They reported that, up to July last year the Council was spending just £6,000 per month on temporary accomodation. This shot up to £2,000,000 per month by May of this year. They are paying out £700 per week to put families in 4 star hotels, when they were previously just paying out £700 per month in Housing Benefit for them. And that’s just Westminster!!

Unfortunately, the tory “flag ship” boroughs of Westminster, Kensington, Wandsworth, are only too happy to do this. It allows them to brown-nose the Westminster gang by implementing policy with gusto, and they can get the money back from Council Tax, although these boroughs already are well-served by bigger central government precepts. Win-Win.

It is win-win-win when they can export these “problems ” ie families without the stellar salaries, to other regions. Apparently the South coast towns are bracing them selves for the influx. They have no plans or funds, but they know that storm is heading their way.

In the USA during the depression (new & old) they had squatter camps – Hoovervilles they were called – of the destitute and hungry. I can see them happening here, but more likely to be desolate caravan parks, out of sight, out of mind. More money for those vulture landlords who are ready to make a killing from poverty.

Quite right Florence! I also recently discovered, that Tendering Council, which covers Clacton (2nd most impoverished seaside town) have quickly brought in a ruling that nobody can get Council Tax relief if they move there untill they have lived there for 3 years!
