The impact of capping increases in benefit to 1% will be greater than most people realise. This is because the official inflation figure does not reflect the actual increases in prices (especially fuel and food), and that for those on benefits those items comprise the vast majority of their expenditure. There is a time lag between starting to struggle and the impact (such as becoming homeless, or malnutrition), and a further time lag before the figures are gathered to show the impact. Which actually can bring us back to the question of ‘how many deaths?’, which gives us a further time lag on receiving the information. The problem for the government is, can they hold a lid on it until after the 2015 election?
