Your sick notes aren’t good enough claim Ashton under Lyne Jobcentre – The Poor Side of Life
Universal Credit is destroying life for both working and non-working people, writes SeerCharlotte 71 on The Poor Side of Life.
A man who wanted to remain nameless has been claiming Universal Credit but he got sick so he did the responsible thing – he went to his doctor and got a sick note.
The doctor stated on his sick note his medical condition so he took it into the Jobcentre. He was told that this sick note wasn’t good enough and that he needed to get another one because it needed the words written on it: “He’s got worse”.
He went back to the doctor; got another sick note – but the doctor quite rightly said, “I can’t write that in a sick note, but I can write your condition which will explain it.”
He took his third sick note in and they said again: “It’s not good enough.”
Since when were the Jobcentre advisors – or ‘coaches’ as they now like to be called – fully trained medical officials?
This man is very obviously Ill. He was cold and hungry and very fed up about the whole situation. He said that all they have ever done to him is to treat him like rubbish, like something that you step on in the street. He’s not had any money for a long time now either.
He said they he felt like what they wanted him to do was to disappear and not to come back because they just want to save money regardless.
He’s right – they do.

Where claimants have medical conditions of any sort only a qualified medical practitioner should make these decisions. Get rid of unqualified DWP staff including the top management and make certain that all the judgments are dealt with professionally and not just with the object of humiliating and depriving deserving cases. This is very important for Labour to guarantee if it is to be re-elected.
I don’t think they actually do want to save money. Their ‘reforms’ cost more than they save with people having to be rehoused in private housing because of the bedroom tax, or Atos being given enormous sums of money ( that they pay no tax on) to second guess NHS doctors. Then there are the huge figures for the Universal Credit fiasco, or the cost of chasing people for five pounds of Council Tax. They’re spending billions on stopping people getting money.
I think it’s more sinister than saving money. IDS and his cult in the DWP really do see themselves on a mission to ‘change behaviour’ and believe they’re being cruel to be kind. They’re prepared, like the inquisition, to destroy bodies to save souls.
No coincidence that Ashton-under-Lyne were the first jobcentre to trial universal credit. Despite much government and right wing media hype, universal credit is far from fit for purpose. Perhaps the computer didn’t recognise the medical terminology, or the name of the street, or maybe the commas were in the wrong place. Either way, the system couldn’t deal with it and computer said no ….
Disgusting they target the wrong people this man is genuine yet they penalise him yet we see benefit scroungers on tv who get everything at the drop of a hat so wrong
