Graph shows how Osborne’s ‘One Nation’ budget attacks the poor

George Osborne’s claim that a boost to incomes from his National Living Wage would leave ordinary families with a higher standard of living is bunk, according to the i paper and the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

The IFS said the budget would make the poorest 10 per cent of families about £800 a year worse off by 2019, while the next-poorest 10 per cent would suffer a greater loss as their annual incomes were slashed by £1,100.

The regressive nature of Osborne’s changes is revealed by the fact that the richest 10 per cent of families will see their incomes fall by only £350 a year, while the second-richest 10 per cent will lose virtually nothing.

“Child poverty is expected to shoot up and the majority of losers from the squeeze on tax credits will be people in work,” the newspaper stated.

And IFS director Paul Johnson pointed out that the £4 billion aggregate increase in employment income from Osborne’s £9-per-hour Living Wage would not compensate for the £12 billion cut in social security. Both are to be in place by 2020.

Osborne’s budget is more like Pandora’s Box – the more we see of it, the worse the evil that comes out of it.

It is right that you and all of us who want a decent approach to fairness in this short life point out the unfairness and bias of this budget in favour of those who already have so much at the cost to those with so little, especially those unable to work through disability and all forms of ill heath Mike, but all we seem to do at this time is to complain about it whereas, unless we are going to allow this dictatorship of a so-called government to continue persecuting so many, we need to find a way to get rid of it long before it finishes destroying so many of us.

UNITE and action is the only possible answer.

A very informative graph: that provides more information (that is more reliable, as it is based on data selected and compiled by a respected independent research group – the IFS) than 7 or 8 national newspapers. Reading the headlines of those newspapers you’d have thought we were about to enter William Blake’s Jerusalem.

Mike that is an extremely revealing graph it should be made available to as many people as possible, certainly through all the internet and media. I should imagine that social networks would be a start. I would imagine that you have ‘good connections’ yourself.

its time for the british to rise up again like they did against Thatcher and the poll tax,her fight against the unions.the politically induced fight against the miners and her destruction of manufacturing industry.
    WAKE UP ENGLAND !!

You’re right leonc1963 – as a terminally-ill person with an income of £6500, I’ve already lost £865 this year thanks to the bedroom tax.

I am totally with Rupert, agree in all he says but my body is worn out in my late 60’s being the opposite of a shirker /scrounger ( Tory Rhetoric) denied ESA after twelve months despite many health problems.

Running five companies employing more than fifty staff, collecting VAT, paying Employer’s contribution of N.I. driven crazy by the HMRC interrogations to see if they can find a bit more more.

We are being persecuted by a minority government and it has to stop, five more years of these evil pocket lining gremlins will see another 100,000 dead + selling off the rest of the UK assets.

My average week was 70 hours+ with a 2 week holiday break, not like this condescending bunch with their summer long vacation breaks etc.

I want the younger generation to rise up and kick this shower to kingdom come.

Thank god I am not disabled but for those poor people my heart bleeds and I will fight in their corner for as long as can.

Why the UN has not brought a case against IDS or the Tory government is beyond comprehension why is it, they must be funded by the EU, why are they so quiet.?

      Amen to that.
I wanted my generation to do it but – to our eternal shame – my generation has been weak.

When it suits them, the govt is much taken with other ways of presenting the data. I would like to see this graph re-drawn to show % of income taken off each band.

I would expect it to show how even more savage the cuts are for the poor. 30% off ESA and familes on tax credits, but -£480 for the richest must be something like 0.0001%.

I agree. This graph seems to show that everyone will be losing something. If that richest 10% was broken down, how many would be making large gains to offset the mere 4% cut?

In reference to Messrs Osborne, Cameron and IDS. the statement by Mark Twain who attributed it to another conservative PM Benjamin Disraeli seems apt. ” There are Lies, there are damned lies, and there are Statistics” !!
