Man douses himself in petrol inside Ashton Under Lyne Jobcentre.  | The poor side of life

Last Updated: September 10, 2015By

“No problems with the benefits system,” says Iain Duncan Smith.

The man walked into the Jobcentre with a petrol container.. He looked desperate by all accounts. We cannot say for definite what his exact reasoning behind this was but what we can say is that this man was in mental anguish. Along with thousands of claimants everyday he was most likely pushed to the edge. He couldn’t take anymore. Death it seems was the only option to him, and he wanted to show the DWP staff who work at the Jobcentre and who have most likely treated him without compassion just how desperate he had become.  He opened the petrol container over himself and stood there.

Now did the Jobcentre staff try and approach him in a sympathetic manner? No they didn’t. Whilst this was happening not one member of staff by all accounts actually spoke to him like a human being. Maybe talking to him with sympathy in the first place could have prevented this. They phoned the police and immediately they phoned for an ambulance. He was handcuffed and taken away in an ambulance. We hope that he is making a recovery. The anguish he must have been going through must have been immense. The threat of having everything to taken away from you does that.

It was noted by ALL accounts that the Jobcentre workers inside the building did not show compassion, one thought that it was fitting to smile. One Jobcentre worker walked outside and was smiling. This angered members of the public who were sat across the road. From all accounts she was very lucky not to have been attacked by members of the public. Not because of her job title, but because she was half smiling and one account said sneering.

There needs to be more mental hospitals – this man (assuming he lives) needs to be institutionalised for the foreseeable future as he is clearly too ill to function.

And yet when Mohamed Bouazizi Tunisian street vendor who set himself on fire on 17 December 2010, in protest of the confiscation of his wares and the harassment and humiliation that he reported was inflicted on him by a municipal official and her aides, his act became a catalyst for the Tunisian Revolution and the wider Arab Spring, inciting demonstrations and riots throughout Tunisia in protest of social and political issues in the country.

In 2011, Bouazizi was posthumously awarded the Sakharov Prize jointly along with four others for his and their contributions to “historic changes in the Arab world”. The new Tunisian government honoured him with a postage stamp. The Times of the United Kingdom named Bouazizi as “Person of 2011”.

Odd that this man contributes historic changes in the Arab world and gets headline news across the world and this poor desperate man like Mohamed Bouazizi gets nothing.

Poor man! Just shows what the Governments propaganda against benefit claimants has done to the staff with not one of them willing to help this man! Makes me ashamed to be British.

Why is it that the majority of the horrific reports about Job Centres are this particular one?

    • Mike Sivier September 11, 2015 at 8:27 am - Reply

That’s easy – because this particular Job Centre has a group of people keeping a watchful eye on it.
There’s no reason to believe similar stories happen all the time at every other Job Centre…
But there’s every reason to believe they happen at some of them.

        @Mike
“because this particular Job Centre has a group of people keeping a watchful eye on it.”………………I understand that particular Jobcentre+ was the “pathfinder” (or as known in my day – a test bed) for Universal Credit.

Horrifying, but not surprising given the callous brutality spreading done from the top.

I’m just gobsmacked that someone can feel such desolation & abandonment they would see burning alive as a preferable way out of their desperation. If this had happened on Cameron’s doorstep, it would have been labeled a terrorist attack.

I never heard or saw anything about this on the news, again they are keeping the horror stories of what is happening to the people in this country who are suffering under the nazi boot heel that is the tory party, there should have been absolute outrage about this and a mass protest demanding justice for this poor fella, heads should’ve rolled long ago, all this shows is how bad things are in this country right now under these posh b*****ds, and it’s only going to get worse, how many more must suffer before the gutless British say enough is enough!

Just hours after Corbyn’s victory speech,a memo was sent by Cameron’s office to Tory constituencies outlining the script to be relayed to the media by way of soundbites for news bulletins. The intention from now until the next election or as a result of his deposing by the Blairites within the PLP (or whichever comes first), is to feed a constant stream of this kind of soundbite to the public.

It goes something like this – “Corbyn is a threat to national security, the economy and families.” This will be repeated over and over again on a daily basis until the public are sufficiently brainwashed.

Thus Corbyn will be portrayed as.a kind of child snatcher figure from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The point being that demonisation works. But not on its own. What else is required is censorship by omission. If it’s not reported, it simply isn’t happening.

So the concept of enough will never be enough until we end up like a third world country which is our direction of travel..
