Corrie’s Cherylee Houston wrongly branded a benefits cheat in attack on her own doorstep

Last Updated: November 13, 2015By

This is how the Conservative Party has managed to get away with victimising the disabled and people with long-term illnesses for more than five years – driving many to their deaths.

It is clear from this account that members of the public are far too easily-swayed by a slick PR line and are too willing to believe anything the government tells them.

The fact that the fool in this incident called Cherylee Houston – who is a professional actress in the UK’s longest-running television soap opera – a “benefts cheat” shows how deep the Tory rhetoric has penetrated.

It is how the Conservatives have managed to cut the benefits of hundreds of thousands of people, despite the fact that they were in genuine need.

Vox Political recently reported that, after the Tory-led DWP suspended repeat work capability assessments for ESA claimants, the number of claimant deaths started to fall.

Coronation Street star Cherylee Houston was wrongly branded a ‘benefits cheat’ in an attack on her own doorstep.

The soap star, who has played Izzy Armstrong since 2010, was threatened with being reported after a man saw her walk a few steps.

Cherylee, 39, was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome when she was 23-years-old.

The rare connective tissue disorder affects the joints and leaves suffers in chronic pain.

After witnessing the actress struggle a few steps to her wheelchair, the man claimed to have snapped a picture to ‘expose her’.

He approached her home and ended up ranting at her husband Toby.

Cherylee tweeted: “Wow disability hate crime knocked on our front door today literally. Scary as shows how much our country’s instinct is to hate not think.

“He was very rude to Toby and obviously disgusted that I wasn’t paralysed.. Said it wasn’t right and he was going to papers. Vile. Ignorant,” she added.

It is some source of comfort that Ms Houston’s story prompted an outpouring of support after she recounted the events on Twitter.

The biggest benefit cheats seem to be those in the DWP who cheat by depriving those in real need for the sake of keeping their own jobs; shame, shame, shame.

I’ve noticed that Donna on EastEnders walks a few steps from time to time. Doesnt mean she can walk more than a few yards at a time.

I have COPD so cant walk very far but otherwise am reasonably agile. I worry that people will query my use of a mobility scooter, and assume the taxpayer has paid for it.

Yep, Donna has said her ability to walk varies depending on how much pain she is in. (She gets attacked by idiots in public too).

I hate to disappoint this idiot but izzy does occasionally walk around her lounge (albeit very stiffly and never for more than a few steps). If he had spent five minutes on Houston ‘s wikipedia page he would have discovered her condition and the reality of it. As usual prejudice took precedent.

Looking at that picture she doesn’t look “disabled” at all, she looks like a healthy young woman who can and should get up and get a job.

Do you work for the DWP? ;-)
      Your satire is biting.

Urm James, the article states she is an actress in Corrie. I do hope you are being satirical (if not your prejudice is appalling).

Appalling, but this happens more and more with hidden disabilities, EDS, SLE, MS. Some days are better than others. My EDS daughter who uses a disability scooter and successfully claims all relevant benefits(yes she’s the one!,) knows about this.

To try and blame this government for some ignorant prat’s comment is outrageously laughable. People like him would have said what he did, regardless!

Would they? How do you know?
Are you denying the possibility that a Tory Government-supporting media might be putting ideas into people’s heads?
Your attitude is risible. You have nothing but your own opinion and yet any other interpretation is fit only for laughter, as far as you are concerned.
      Give us all a break.

I believe that the people in this country have been fed this nonsense for so long by the tories that they believe that anyone not working is an idle good for nothing living it up off the tax payers, indeed the consistent “for hardworking people ” mantra of the tories pushes this whole idea that they are there for the people who matter the hard workers not the sick disabled or otherwise unemployed, just like the fascists did in the mid 30’s.

Biggest cheats are the tory government, always has been, always will be, posh, privileged scroungers supported by the right wing media to attack everyone with any ailment and branding it as faking it, this is what modern day Britain under the tory boot heel, this is reality, did anyone think otherwise, idiots who voted for them now realise they were lied to, duh, really, did you honestly think they would stand by their commitments, they’re tories, they’re politicians, they never stand by what they say, especially the right wing, biggest haters of all!
