DWP under fire over state pension ‘misdirection’ – Citywire

Last Updated: November 15, 2015By

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has been accused of misinforming retirees about their state pension, causing them to suffer financial loss.
The revelation comes in a report from the Independent Case Examiner (ICE), a non-civil servant individual employed by the government to give an independent and impartial view on complaints that the DWP cannot resolve internally.

The report covers the period between 1 April 2014 and 31 March 2015.

It highlighted complaints made about the DWP’s Pension Service, which runs the state pension system and also provides help with state pension eligibility and claims.

Over the period, DWP received 6,892 complaints over its Pension Service. Of these 233 were referred to the ICE, which fully investigated 55. Of those, 20% were fully upheld, 29% partially upheld and 51% not upheld.

ICE Joanna Wallace said misinformation about deferring the state pension was a ‘particular feature’ of the complaints received over the period.

She said: ‘Allegations of misdirection about deferring state pension have again been a particular feature of the cases we have looked at this reporting year.’

One must examine what the motive of such mis-direction could achieve.

Well it used to be simple you paid for a state pension, and in some cases an employers pension, you could opt out of either but not both. these days it seems that the government wants to kill the deficit by having you spend the money before you retire leaving you impoverished and more likely to die earlier than you would due to freezing and malnourishment in much the same way as the sick disabled and incapacitated are.
