SNP MP Natalie McGarry investigated over ‘missing donations’

An SNP MP has been named as the person being investigated by police over financial discrepancies from a campaign fund for Scottish independence.

Natalie McGarry, the Glasgow East MP, was one of the new intake of nationalists MPs in May’s general election.

The party said it was aware of discrepancies in the accounting at Women for Independence.

Ms McGarry’s solicitor said she denied any wrongdoing.

I’m keeping an open mind on this one for now. I do not know any more of the details than the BBC who are happy to blame McGarry, as an SNP MP. Yes, if there were discrepancies in funding, it is right that, as a founder member of the organisation, she should be investigated. We have not been told whether any other less prominent members of Women for Independence are also under investigation. That would not be news-worthy.

I am not saying this as an SNP supporter, Yes voter or any other cyber-nat title I might be given. I believe in innocent until proven guilty and, if she is found to have de-frauded the funds, I would expect her instant resignation (preferably) or expulsion from the SNP.

Michelle Thomson resigned off her own bat, due to the connection with her husband who I believe had been in dodgy dealings. Whether she was part of that is not known but she made the right decision for the party. I would hope that McGarry will do the same if investigations go against her.
