DWP sacked staff member while she received treatment for cancer

Last Updated: January 13, 2016By

As Neil Kinnock once said about Tory Britain: “Don’t get sick.”

It seems that advice rings true for people employed by the Conservative Government, as much as for anybody else.

If the DWP may be described as a gang of thieves, taking benefits from people to whom they are rightfully owed – and I think it can, then there is no honour amongst them.

A woman has claimed she was sacked from her job at a disability benefits centre for taking too much time off – while receiving treatment for incurable cancer.

Pauline Fisher, 65, found out days before Christmas that Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) bosses had rejected an appeal against a decision to sack her.

She had been signed off sick since June from the job she’s held for the past decade.

Pauline, who has been diagnosed with an incurable cancer, was adamant she would be fit again to work following her chemotherapy treatment.

But management at the Warbreck House office in Blackpool, Lancs., said they had made efforts to make suitable arrangements for her to come back and wrote to her saying she had “failed to maintain an acceptable level of attendance”.

Pauline says she qualified for full sick pay for the six months after she was signed off by a doctor in August, having first been sent home in June.

I bet she could blow a few whistles!

I am all for weeding out cheats but this is more of a fetish type of hatred for those who need help. There can be no honour amongst thieves and the DWP is one of the greatest examples where honour is nowhere to be seen that I have ever come across.

Well at least they treat their staff with the same contempt as the rest of the Country.

Something justn’t quite gel here – that lady is 65 and qualified for her State pension at an age approaching 63, two years earlier.

Yes, but some people continue working for reasons of their own. Perhaps she was the only person in that area with the required expertise?

I thought it wa illegal to dismiss staff on medical grounds and certainly as a LGO she is entitled to 6 months full pay and six months half pay for long term sickness. This doesn’t make any sense.

They would say they weren’t dismissing on medical grounds but because the employee had been absent from work for too long a period.
Mrs Mike lost her job because she’d had to take a huge amount of time off due to sickness.
