Another Tory council complains to David Cameron over ‘unrealistic’ budget cuts

David Cameron was accused of hypocrisy in November after he protested about local authority cuts to public services in his Oxfordshire constituency [Image: Getty].

Remember when the leader of David Cameron’s own local authority, Oxfordshire Council, wrote to complain about the amount of cuts required by the Conservative Government?

At first, he unrealistically complained about the weight of his own policies on local authorities.

Then he offered Oxfordshire the advice of staff at 10 Downing Street – preferential treatment that breached the ministerial code.

Some of us complained bitterly about that, but we never heard about it again.

Now East Sussex Council has made the same complaint.

Will Cameron offer the same remedy?

The Conservative-run East Sussex council has written to the prime minister David Cameron to complain about cuts to its budget, saying they will “significantly reduce the quality of life” for people in the area.

The letter, also sent to the chancellor, George Osborne, and Greg Clark, the communities secretary, was signed by the leader of the council, Conservative Keith Glazier, plus the leaders of the council’s other party groupings, including Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the UK Independence party.

The council, which has always been Conservative-led, says it recognises the government’s “continued commitment to reduce the national deficit”, but that the expectations on the local authority to reduce spending were unrealistic.

I can’t understand why they’re only just complaining. Did these Tory Councils think that the Nasty Party’s austerity programme, as it takes us forward to the 18th century, wouldn’t apply to them?

I live in East sussex they made 80 million in savings and got told well done we want another 80 million we have the oldest population of over 65’s in the whole country compared to other bands and rest homes are rammed even the terrible ones.
Even with a extra 2% charge on everyone’s council tax to pay for just adult social care that’s not enough so everyone on benefits / low pay have to pay at a minimum 20% of council tax. I didn’t notice my DLA & ESA increasing 20% in April, it’s gone beyond crisis point in East sussex. I honestly think we might be the first council to declare brancryputy.

Another clue adult social care is consulting on a 50% total cut across most services next financial year barring payments for care homes! Two extra care schemes being delivered by housing associations are being shelved because the cost of the care cannot be afforded and they are 100% built just not opened it’s crazy. But i bet the sheep in this county still vote for the Tories it’s maddening what can Labour supporters do!
