Muslim women ‘stopped from becoming Labour councillors’
Muslim Women’s Network UK was right to raise this issue with the Labour leadership. Nobody should be stopped from entering politics because of their race, religion, age, colour or anything else that marks them out as a minority – and they most definitely should not be held back because of their gender.
Last time This Writer checked, there were more women in the UK than men – and I do not support minority rule.
Nor, I believe, does Jeremy Corbyn.
Let’s all keep an eye on this; there’s a chance to make a positive difference here.
A Muslim women’s group has written to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn claiming women have been stopped from becoming councillors by Muslim men in the party.
Muslim Women’s Network UK demanded an inquiry into “systematic misogyny displayed by significant numbers of Muslim male local councillors”.
“They don’t like women to be heard, to be empowered,” it told BBC Newsnight.
Labour said it had the best record of any of the parties in selecting female and ethnic minority candidates.

It is still very much women should be seen and not heard with many men of all religions and backgrounds. Those men who support women are very much thanked, however, those who do not should be quietly encouraged to and hopefully in the future there will be equality of the sexes.
Hmm they cant have it both ways they stopped their women from becoming councillors strange nah its their way its only heartache for getting envolved with this argument has its custom forwomen to bow to their husband ops you wanted diversity and all that comes with it
If Moslem male councillors are up to this kind of discrimination, then they need to be replaced, preferably with the women they are trying to deny access to politics.
Totally agree Mohandeer! At first I thought it was a slur against Labour, and am now concerned that others, ie the media could also give this impression. At least Mike put me right as I read on; and your comment is helpful too x
