One-punch man knocked out ‘appalling’ clubber after seeing him spit at disabled woman – and is spared jail

Spared: Lewis Drabble avoided jail following the attack [Image: Facebook].

This Blog remains firmly opposed to violence – but undoubtedly there are many who would have preferred the judge to hand Lewis Drabble a medal rather than community service.

It is notable that the judge condemned the victim‘s behaviour as “appalling”.

Note also that the defendant in this case acted as a man who knew a little about life with a disability because his sister has one.

It’s past time people stood up for the disabled, not because they have a friend in the same situation but because, even though they don’t have such a contact, they know it is wrong.

Then we’ll have made some progress against the hateful propaganda spewed by members of the Conservative Parasites and their puppy press.

A man who knocked out an “appalling” clubber with a single punch after witnessing him spit drinks at a disabled woman has been spared jail.

Lewis Drabble followed the 22-year-old man out of a club and delivered a “haymaker” to the back of his head after becoming enraged at the reveller’s behaviour.

The pair had been in the Ritz in Whitworth Street, Manchester, and Manchester Crown Court heard how the attack came moments after the victim and his friend spat drinks over a girl in a wheelchair.

Amanda Johnson, defending Drabble, a 23-year-old kitchen fitter of Market Street, Hyde, told his Manchester Crown Court sentencing he had been incensed by the abuse because his girlfriend’s sister also had a disability.

Sentencing Drabble [who admitted causing the man GBH], Judge [Martin] Steiger said the victim’s behaviour was ‘appalling’.

He added that Drabble’s ‘intemperate’ behaviour could not be ‘excused’, but said an 18 month community order, with 240 hours unpaid work, and £1,000 compensation order to the victim, was an ‘appropriate’ resolution.

£1000 fine? To an aerosol that asked to be smacked? The £1000 should have been awarded to the young lady to be paid by the thing Mr Drabble hit!

The ‘victim’ should have his photo ID plastered in all pubs/clubs and not allowed to enter ANY establishments due to his ‘anti social behaviour’. People are ‘barred’ from establisments for less so this should be introduced as a behavoiural and discrimination issue.

I also have a little experience in this area, having had a member of my family with a disability. It goes without saying, but people should be treated with equal respect, irrespective of what problems (mental or physical), that they might have. Thankfully, I can’t remember ever having come across a situation like you describe, however, given the right circumstances, I wouldn’t hesitate going over and giving them a piece of my mind, or planting one on them(not my preferred method I have to say). I suppose it is perhaps a similar thing to being bullied, I have in the past asked the ‘bully’, how THEY would feel if THEY were the one on the receiving end. Sadly though, some people are just plain ars*h*les !

That the judge ordered this lad to fork out a grand in compo to some prat who thought it would be funny to spit at a disabled person is, to me at least, disgusting and insulting. As a disabled person myself, I spent my school years and more dodging such vile behaviour; if someone in my year had been punished so heavy-handedly for standing up for me in light of that behaviour, I’d have gone mad, as would my parents and those of my friends.

I’m not saying it’s wrong to give the lad a slap on the wrist, even if what he did was the wrong way to do the right thing, but to financially-compensate to someone who acted like a complete prat sends entirely the wrong message to people who behave like that with regularity and escape unpunished – it tells them that even if they get caught, they’ll still come out better-off.

Well the judge could not let it go without doing anything as it would encourage more people to react violently but i thinks he £1000 compensation was unecessary, he is already losing 6 weeks pay.

An appropriate resolution would have been an absolute discharge.
It seems to me that the “perpetrator” was simply fulfilling his public duty in detaining the assailant until such time as he could be handed over into the custody of a police officer, even he did so instinctively rather than by making a calculated decision in knowledge of the law and even if his solicitor failed to represent that significant detail, the judge should know and uphold the law.
What compensation did the criminal scum who assaulted the actual disabled victim in her wheelchair have to pay her?

      Good question!

How unfortunate the disabled woman in the wheelchair did not request police action against those who abused her. Lewis Drabble was a hero not the villain of the piece. The real villains were the uncouth yobs who spat at a defenceless woman in a wheelchair. My days of throwing “haymakers” may be over but I would have settled for kneeing them in the nuts.

Only one person spat at the disabled woman. I certainly agree that he was the villain of the piece.

Looks like somebody’s been doing his 100 sit-ups, push-ups and squats and 10km runs every day for the past three years straight! :P -props to anyone who gets this reference-

Anyway, I’d have probably done the same in this guy’s shoes. His sentence is rotten, but dem’s the breaks. Better people have had much worse punishments for their good deeds.

I hope the woman is alright.

Hopefully when this spitting low lifes behaviour hits the local media he might do the right thing by reimbursing the fine or donating it to a disabled cause. Not sure when this lame brain sobers up, and his family realise what they bought into this world, he might not like the back lash he will be getting from the public and friends he might still have.
Justice was not served on this occassion the fine and work imposition were far too harsh.
