Government cuts to social services could be killing large numbers of vulnerable people in England, a health journal has said, as new figures show 2015 saw the biggest increase in the national death rate for decades.

Preliminary figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicate mortality rates in 2015 rose by 5.4 percent on 2014 – an increase of nearly 27,000 deaths, bringing the total to 528,340.

Death rates in England and Wales had been falling since the 1970s, but this trend reversed in 2011 when mortality rates started rising.

Health advisers are now saying the rising death rate could be caused by cuts to vital social services. Oxford University Professor Danny Dorling, who is also an adviser to Public Health England, said the increase in deaths could be the biggest since World War II.

Any civilised government would be extremely concerned at this statement. If no further studies are undertaken this is proof in itself that this is a deliberate and pre-planned criminal act being carried out by the government against the people. The UN investigation should be stepped up and other members should be insisting on immediate remedial action. Perhaps a pile of 528340 sets of teeth and glasses placed outside parliament would illustrate the extent of the crime, even if IDS would consider it to be a monument to his work.

This is very interesting. I have compared the figures with those in Scotland and they are very different. Our equivalent (I believe) all ages, standardised figures per 100,000 population have shown a steady decline from 2007, apart from a slight .8% rise in 2012. With our aging population I would have expected the rate to be higher. Could this mean a better health system or our austerity-alleviating measures actually help?
