Project Fear defused: Cameron’s wild claims are softened by comparison with David Brent

David Cameron has been desperately defending himself after his latest claims about the UK’s future if we vote to leave the EU were denounced as ‘Project Fear’.

It’s his own fault; the claim that voting to leave the EU would lead to at least 10 years of “uncertainty” is unverifiable – the only country to leave the Union previously is Greenland, and the exit negotiations lasted three years.

The UK’s involvement is greater than that country’s, so negotiations may last longer – but nobody can say that they definitely will, or that they will definitely last at least 10 years.

It is notable that Nicola Sturgeon has warned Cameron against fighting a “miserable, negative, fear-based” campaign. One way or the other, she knows about ‘Project Fear’!

Ministers are warning of at least 10 years of “uncertainty” if the UK votes to leave the European Union.

A government analysis says the economy, financial markets and the rights of Britons living overseas could be affected during a complex negotiation to “unravel” the UK’s membership.

But Commons Leader Chris Grayling, who is campaigning for a UK exit, said the 10-year claim was “ludicrous”.

He accused the government of running a “relentless campaign of fear”.

Meanwhile Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who wants to remain in the EU, warned David Cameron against fighting a “miserable, negative, fear-based” referendum campaign.

In fairness, Cameron has tried to defend himself against the ‘Project Fear’ accusation – unconvincingly.

The Huffington Post – and the Daily Mirror (see the image at the top of this article) – reported that his protestations made him look less like David Cameron and more like David Brent.

Many on social media noted how the Prime Minister echoed Ricky Gervais’s greatest creation when dismissing claims his arguments can be summed up as “Project Fear”.

At a “PM Direct” event in Ipswich… Cameron told students: “The only project I’m interested in is Project Fact. Project Fact is about saying: ‘Stay in and you know what you’ll get.’”

Some drew comparisons to the fictional Wernham Hogg boss when he noted of his superior management style: “You will never work in a place like this again. This is brilliant. Fact.”
