Cameron says only the Tories can challenge the SNP in Scotland. Sturgeon must be delighted

Last Updated: March 4, 2016By

Nicola Sturgeon must be delighted by David Cameron’s (false) claim that Labour has collapsed in Scotland and only the Conservative Party can challenge the SNP.

In Scotland, the Tories are nowhere. They are deeper in limbo than Labour have ever been, and Sturgeon knows this.

But no doubt the media will seize on Cameron’s over-inflated claim, and opinion-formers will work hard to sway the public.

Result: A bigger majority for the SNP.

Because, no matter what Cameron and the Tory press say, Scottish people won’t believe a word of it.

In a speech to the Scottish Conservative conference, the prime minister insisted his party was the only one that could challenge the Nationalists.

He also described what he saw as the SNP’s “litany of failure” in power.

Opinion polls suggest the Conservatives are in a race with Labour for second place ahead of May’s Holyrood election.

The SNP is widely expected to secure a second successive majority in the Scottish Parliament in the election on 5 May, with the party having also formed a minority government between 2007 and 2011.

Too true, they don’t. I caught a bit of Ruthie’s speech today but had to switch off after about 2 minutes. I hate to think what Cameron’s was like. Labour may have burnt their bridges up here, for now anyway, but there is no way the Tories will get anywhere and, as you implied, his sort of rhetoric simply turns voters away rather than get them onside. Not that I’m complaining of course.

The liklihood is that the Scots will be far more impressed with “shabby” Corbyn, than pig porking Cameron in an expensive suit. Sturgeon must know that Corbyn’s Labour is a way back for many Scots and knows only too well the deceitful nature of the Tories. She herself has sided with Corbyn on a few things but never with Cameron since JC has held the leadership. I would be saddened to lose the Scots but it is their choice and they must live that choice.
