Karin Smyth’s words are posted here because she is a friend of This Blog, and because she is right.

Here in Wales, the Conservatives want to academies primary and secondary schools under the pretence that this will save them from closure. In fact, it seems more likely that the cost of reorganisation, coupled with the financial demands of the private organisations that run academies, will drive attainment through the floor and cut off any access to further education.

A Bristol MP says proposals to force all city schools to become academies are ‘ridiculous’.

Karin Smyth says by focusing on reorganising school structures, government ministers are trying to answer a question that nobody is asking.

She believes the real challenges facing schools in her Bristol South constituency escape government attention.

She said: “Asking schools to divert time, money and effort away from raising standards to instead deal with ‘academisation’ is an irresponsible distraction that can only harm young people’s prospects.

“At a time when the government talks about devolving powers down to local communities, forced academy status does exactly the opposite, threatening local accountability too.”

Ms Smyth has written to Secretary of State for Education, Nicky Morgan MP, on behalf of concerned constituents, conveying and echoing strong local opposition to these proposals.

In her letter she says: “People living across south Bristol are rightly proud of their local schools.

“They want them supported and strengthened, not re-structured for the sake of it.”

It’s yet another “let’s see what useless, ill thought out piece of do-do we can think up next”…..and then do our usual u turn when someone with common sense points out our stupidity. In the meanwhile a lot of the Cons donating mates will make some useful extra dosh giving the idea a whirl.
