Fans WERE unlawfully killed in the Hillsborough disaster – and we were all deceived

At last we are getting the truth.

Not only were fans not to blame for the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, but 96 of them were unlawfully killed.

Long-term readers may remember This Blog’s reporting on Hillsborough in 2012, when the Independent Panel reported back. Anybody of good conscience must be horrified at the corruption displayed by the authorities involved at the time.

Will we see justice applied at a proportionate level after today’s findings?

Ninety-six football fans who died as a result of a crush in the Hillsborough disaster were unlawfully killed, the inquests have concluded.

Police failures led to the deaths in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

Jurors answered yes to the question about whether any police error caused or contributed to a dangerous situation at the 1989 FA Cup semi-final.

The behaviour of Liverpool fans did not contribute to the dangerous situation at the turnstiles.

When the conclusion of the unlawful killing was revealed, families were seen hugging each other in the public gallery and some punched the air.

The jury also concluded

  • Police errors caused a dangerous situation at the turnstiles
  • Failures by commanding officers caused a crush on the terraces
  • There were mistakes in the police control box over the order to open the Leppings Lane end exit gates
  • Defects at the stadium contributed the disaster
  • There was an error in the safety certification of the Hillsborough stadium
  • Police delayed declaring a major incident
  • The emergency response including the ambulance service was also delayed

It is difficult to the find words that would constitute a proper comment on this. SHAME on all those who FAILED those people that died is all I can think of. Thatcher is dead. The other two must have known all along that they were lying. SHAME on them.

It is good to see the 96 getting justice, I thought the way the state was dragging it out they never would but it’s pleasing to see them win but will anyone be held to account for what happened that day, the guilty ones, the ones who were to blame for that tragic day should be held accountable, the coppers for their incompetence, the government for lying about what really went on and the press for spreading bull**** about the fans but no, they’ll get away it, as usual!

Personally, I’m actually more determined to see those behind the subsequent cover-up being prosecuted. What happened on the day was dreadful negligence, but ill-will didn’t play a role as such, and so, once proper account by those responsible (not just David Duckenfield) is given, reconciliation is possible.

But the cover-up/smear campaign that followed as the South Yorkshire Police tried to shift blame onto the victims was utterly malicious, and that makes me far angrier than the blundering that led to the Disaster itself. That was premeditated criminal behaviour, an attempt to pervert the course of justice by hiding critical information from the official investigations, and by tarnishing the names of people who had done nothing to cause the tragedy. That crime needs the full weight of the law stacked against it. Starting with the odious Paul Middup….

The negative reporting of victims of authority goes on, with welfare reform.

Although I don’t profess to reading that tory rag, I would be interested in seeing the FULL apology across its front page today…its also slightly distasteful how the current tory prime minister tried a PR stunt on Social Media after the result of the inquest.
