Do we really believe Bernard Jenkin’s claim that Cameron watered down his Trade Union Bill to get the unions to support the Remain campaign?

If the best support he could manage afterwards was from ex-TUC chief Brendan Barber, then we can reasonably conclude that the ploy hasn’t worked.

Besides, we all know how Tories work: Offer a concession in the run-up to a major event, then cancel it immediately afterward.

And, while union leaders can say what they want, members will make their own choices.

Downing Street has been accused by a senior Tory MP of “selling” policies for “cash and political favours”.

Bernard Jenkin claimed the government watered down the Trade Union Bill to ensure union support in its campaign to keep Britain in the EU.

Mr Jenkin told MPs “this stinks” like “cash for questions” and showed the government was at the “rotten heart of the European Union”.

But Business Minister Nick Boles said his claims were “not right”.

He told Mr Jenkin, who is a leading figure in the Vote Leave campaign, that “not every compromise is a conspiracy”.
