One of the Conservative Party’s slickest operators, and he can’t answer a few simple questions about election spending.

Former Conservative party Co-Chairman Grant Shapps came unstuck on live television on Wednesday while being questioned about the Conservative party’s election expenses scandal.

While the mainstream media has largely ignored one of the biggest election scandals Britain has ever seen in favour of salivating over Labour party infighting, social media is in meltdown over the Conservative election expenses scandal. Dozens of Tory MPs face accusations that they illegally overspent in the 2015 general election campaign by failing to declare costs associated with the Conservative campaign “battle buses”. If the allegations are true, the MPs and their agents could face a year in jail and/or an unlimited fine, as well as a three-year ban on holding elective office – potentially triggering by-elections across the country and losing the Conservatives their majority in parliament.

But, beyond Channel 4, which has exposed the revelations, the broadcast media has been largely silent on the scandal – and the BBC, in particular, has been lambasted for its failure to give it significant air time.

Until Wednesday’s Daily Politics, that is, when host Andrew Neil finally bit the bullet and confronted Grant Shapps, who was Conservative Party Co-Chairman during the election campaign, on the allegations.

Very interesting…….but will extra time be given? I doubt it.
They are already too late to prosecute over the 2014 by-election frauds.
By playing for further time, they will also run out of time on the 2015 general election.
The law – as I understand it stands – does not not allow extra time for investigations.
The Tories will just keep on ducking and diving until time runs out.
They have a history of filibustering in Parliament; they are old hands at it.
I will be more than happy to be proved wrong on this occasion, though.

No, they won’t run out – this is about applying for the extra time, to avoid running out of it.
The law does indeed allow extra time, if an application is made for it.
After the extra time is allowed, it won’t run out until the investigation is done and prosecutions have taken place (or not, depending on the result).

In the video is the confidence trickster speaking as Grant Shapps, Michael Green, Sebastian Fox, or perhaps he is hiding behind some other alias?

The Teflon TORIES are as it would seem tend to get away with everything they do illegally and no one wants to stop them.

    Is electoral fraud indictable?
If so, it would have been wonderful to see him detained live on air, until such time as he could be handed over into the custody of a police constable (as the law so quaintly terms what everyone knows and describes as a “citizens arrest”).
The same could be very publicly done to each MP and their agent where the frauds occurred. Given that the offence entails a bar from holding elected office, their bail conditions should keep them from the house – which would encourage a speedy trial so that their constituencies could regain representation, whether by an acquitted MP or their successor through a by-election.
They could still write letters, and pass constituency matters to the relevant government department, but not prop up the Tory party’s illegally gained majority by partaking in any votes or debates.

Staging a citizen’s arrest runs the risk of being charged with assault and false imprisonment – unless the person being arrested submits to it without demur – highly unlikely with these Tory fraudsters!
