The threat to workers’ rights if the UK leaves the European Union is one of the main reasons This Writer is keen to vote Remain.

The Conservatives already have a plan to get rid of the Human Rights Act and disengage from the European Court of Human Rights – an organisation the UK was instrumental in founding.

Without EU directives on working hours, holidays, health and safety and any number of other things that may have a significant effect on our well-being, it will be back to the 18-hour day and the six-day week, Victorian diseases and early mortality for the lot of us.

Do you think that’s overstating the case?

If you do, and the UK comes out of the Union, you’ll have a very nasty surprise.

Workers’ rights will be watered down if Briton’s vote to leave the European Union, a new legal report published by the Trade Union Congress has claimed.

The analysis by the TUC – which represents 52 unions and 5.8 million workers – claims that complete withdrawal from the single market could pave the way for a government “to make sweeping changes to employment law” – including reducing holiday pay and discrimination protections for pregnant workers.

Drawing on an analysis by Michael Ford QC, they claim that even if the UK remained in the single market, but outside the EU, rights such as discrimination compensations and protections for agency workers would be at risk.

One of my main reasons for wanting to stay IN is because I fear the outcome for workers rights under a capitalist dictatorship if we pull out.
