If Tories think Electoral Commission is biased over expenses fraud, let’s see their evidence

Two wrongs don’t make a “right”, as This Writer has stated many times.

If the Conservative Party believes other political organisations have broken UK election spending rules, let them submit their detailed evidence to the Electoral Commission and the police – as I have, along with many others.

It won’t take any of the heat off them, though.

People like Charles Walker seem to think that they can get away with anything if only they can show that somebody else has done it too. That’s not how this works.

If Conservatives, or anyone else, are found guilty of electoral crimes, then they must be punished.

The Electoral Commission risks looking as if it is “biased” in investigating allegations that the Conservatives broke election spending rules, a Tory MP has said.

Charles Walker wrote to the Commission on Tuesday arguing that “a number of political parties have interpreted the rules on election spending in a similar fashion to the Conservative party”.

Mr Walker said other parties including Labour, the SNP, and the Liberal Democrats had registered visits from battle busses as national expenditure rather than locally in constituencies they visited.

This excuse of “we’re not the only ones” appears to have been the Tory defence right from the start, and when Cameron defended the so-called Nasty Party battle-bus he said that other political parties used such buses, the implication being that others had overspent in the same way. They have never been able to provide any evidence to back up this claim, which of course doesn’t excuse their conduct one iota, and I would have thought that if there were any other instances they would have been onto them like a shot by now. The fact remains that these arrogant Tories think they can buy anything and anyone. Let’s hope they come unstuck on this one. My main money is on the Kent Thanet constituency – if they had nothing to hide I doubt they would have employed an expensive barrister in an attempt to prevent the investigation.

“a number of political parties have interpreted the rules on election spending in a similar fashion to the Conservative party”.
    Charles Walker, Tory MP.

How thick are these people. Here we have a definitive admission of intent. Mens rea & Actus reus (Premeditated action in committing a criminal offence) are the two criteria required in law to establish guilt.

One might ask whether the Tory legal fund is coming under pressure, I would suspect so.

Me thinks Mr Walker TOTALLY misses the point here! If this is to do with what I think it is, then it shouldn’t really make any difference whether someone at the head of the Electoral Commission (or employed anywhere else within it), voices a not favourable opinion about the Tories on a Facebook post. At the end of the day, it’s their JOB to look at the evidence, and ONLY the evidence, and make a professional decision as to whether a wrong HAS been committed or not.
