‘Wake up!’ Baroness Campbell’s plea to disabled people over EU referendum apathy

A leading peer has told disabled people to “wake up” to the reality that they could lose many of their hard-won rights if the UK votes to leave the European Union (EU) later this month.

In an impassioned plea, Baroness [Jane] Campbell (pictured) begged other disabled people not to abandon the EU, which she said acted as a “double lock” on disability rights.

She told Disability News Service (DNS): “At the moment, our rights are double-locked. If we leave the EU we can kiss goodbye to all the progress we have made on independent living, employment rights and access to information.”

I am undecided, all I know is that the EU hasn’t done anything about the systematic torture the Tories are putting us through, they are not protecting us, so I am leaning towards leave. I did vote to join the EU when we had the first referendum, I know you will say that our rights will not be protected if we leave but they are not protected now otherwise the Tories wouldn’t be getting away with what they are doing to the disabled & the people that rely on the welfare state as you have said often what they are doing is tantamount to murder but the EU who are supposed to protect us has done nothing.Sorry but that is how I feel, I wish I didn’t.
I also feel we are better off being a part of the EU as you are better off in a large group than alone.
I have listened to debates on both sides, I just wish I could make my mind up..

I think the fact is that, while the Tories have indeed been inflicting torture on us, without the EU laws it would be far, far worse. But don’t take my word for it; we can all find out after June 24 if the vote is ‘Leave’.
The EU doesn’t have a duty to protect us, by the way. Member States propose laws for the good of everybody, because they think they will improve conditions everywhere – not to protect the people of member States from their own government.

I will listen to this lady when she stops trying to tell me what i ac do with my body. I still have not and will never forgive her for her vile comments and insinuations regarding disability and euthanasia.

Her so called locks are mist rather than steel, where is the protections when the Tories have done nothing but try and destroy disabled people in every way possible for years now?

Yes i will vote remain but i also understand that the EU is not a democratic workers paradise. It’s for the 1%’ers and we get the scraps off the table, just look at what the EU is doing to the Greek people especially the old and disabled…

I’m glad you’re voting Remain but sorry you have been so badly misled about certain matters.
The EU has far less responsibility for what happened in Greece than Greece itself. Previous administrations did not fulfil their obligations and ran up huge debts, creating a crisis not only for their own country but for the Eurozone – the currency shared among many, but not all, countries in the EU.
The International Monetary Fund has far more to do with the pain Greece is now suffering than the rest of the EU – but we must remember that Greece put itself into that situation.
Nobody said the EU is a worker’s paradise (although it IS democratic). We can certainly say it provides legal protection for workers’ rights, though.
I’d like to see your proof that it is “for the 1%ers”.
