Right-wing Labour thugs threaten fellow party members

It seems recent reports may have led some members of the public to believe that supporters of Jeremy Corbyn are the only malcontents in the Labour Party. Not so.

While incidents that are related to supporters of the Labour leader are disproven as soon as they are alleged, it seems there is proof of thuggish behaviour by supporters of the mutineers in the Parliamentary Labour Party.

Above are examples of such abuse on Twitter; below is an account of a real-life incident.

Tottenham Constituency Labour Party secretary Seema Chandwani said two men had approached her and Michael Calderbank, who works as a trade union researcher in Parliament, at a pub where they were eating dinner after the packed rally.

She said: “One shouted: ‘Do you both work for f**king McDonnell?’

“They were right in our face, aggressively shouting: ‘Where the f**k are you from, why are you f**king here?’ — to which point we told them to ‘f**k off, we can go where we like.’

“They then started to threaten us with physical violence, now both right in the face of my comrade.

“He just told them to get out of his face but they continued shouting and threatening us.

“Security came over and had to throw them out … we weren’t scared, we didn’t even get up from our seats, we were just shocked these people were from the Labour Party.”

On tv news (sky or bbc, I cant remember) night before last. The tv interview linked to a union representative who mildly and thoughtfully explained the constructive way for Labour to move forward. Then the link went to voice only of John McTernan who sounded completely unhinged and beside himself with anger.

Oddly normal centre-left members of the Executive Committee said the opposite and that they were bullied and even threatened during meetings by more left-wing individuals. Mr Corbyn refused to leave the meeting and tried to stop a secret ballot from taking place. One lady, yesterday, on the news, clearly upset and shaken, claimed that she had been intimidated and threatened and had her personal email spammed with hostile messages, some threatening violence against both her and her family.

This kind of awfulness is happening on both sides of the widening divide.

I wish both sides could get a grip.

What kind of men threaten women with violence though, even feigned violence?

This isn’t the Labour party I used to belong to and know.

How do you know what the NEC’s members said? Were you there?
The claim that Corbyn refused to leave the meeting has already been refuted.
He was right to try to stop secret voting.
How is your lady on the news any different from all the other people who have been found to have been lying on behalf of the Labour ‘coup’ organisers? The default position for us, when these people come out with their stories, is disbelief.

Well, I wasn’t at the NEC meeting but Johanna Baxter was and it was she who made the allegations I mentioned in my post. (Ms Baxter is a long-standing member of the Labour party who sits on the NEC as a representative of constituency Labour parties.) You are beginning to sound paranoid, Mike, believing that anything said or done that doesn’t chime with Jeremy Corbyn’s ascendency is either a lie or plot to unseat him rather than a genuine and/or worthy opinion or statement of facts.

You have almost completely lost your objectivity it seem to me.

I’m aware of Johanna Baxter, having met her at a meeting of my local CLP.
She strikes me as being a strong woman who is unlikely to lose her composure very easily.
I wonder if she has received any threats at all – but I doubt it.
In all honesty, coming in the midst of a series of lies about the behaviour of Corbyn supporters and threats of violence, my personal inclination is not to believe her story.
Were you aware the Luton Hotel where Angela Eagle said she cancelled an appearance due to threats has categorically stated that this wasn’t true?

It seems to me that, if anybody sounds paranoid, it is people like Ms Baxter, Ms Eagle and the others who oppose Mr Corbyn.

How can you say something like that so blithely, Mike? How do you know what the NEC’s members said? Were you there?

      • Mike Sivier July 15, 2016 at 9:10 pm - Reply

        I didn’t write it blithely.
Other than that, I intend to treat your remark with the contempt it deserves.

And now we’re told that the NEC are literally trolling social media to ban anyone using ‘specific phrases’ from voting in the leadership election – of course, anti-corbynites never threaten or intimidate anyone, do they?? Just 3 examples below

At the Lambeth Country show, there was a lot of abuse auimed at people supporting Corbyn. One person shouted “Corbyn should be shot” accused MOmentum of being all bullies, and then shouted very loudly “don’t call me a bitch!” when the person she was speaking to said no such thing! Another said “you must be mentally ill to support Corbyn.” Thankfully the unpleasantness was more than made up for by the postive response from a lot of people!
