Jeremy Corbyn pledges bus and rail service reforms

Good for Mr Corbyn!

Whenever This Writer phones home, my dear sainted mother usually has another horror story to tell about changes to the Bristol bus service, which is run by a private company.

Put plainly, it doesn’t take people where they want to go and it doesn’t get them even near those places at anything like a useful time.

What’s the point?

A publicly-run bus system would have a duty to provide services that actually serve.

The advantages of re-nationalising rail services have been discussed on This Blog so often that I certainly hope I don’t need to go over them again.

Jeremy Corbyn is pledging to extend public ownership of the country’s bus networks if he becomes prime minister.

The Labour leader, who is battling against challenger Owen Smith to retain his job, has said he will “rebuild and transform Britain’s transport system”.

He will pledge later to offer councils new franchising powers and allow them to set up local bus companies.

He will also set out plans to bring railways back into public ownership to fix the present “transport nightmare”.

My daughter, when home from working abroad, lives in Bristol, and has compained to us many a time over the state of the bus services there, and all over the UK.
When she travels, by two changes of train, and then 3 changes of bus, just to come visit us in west Wales, it literally takes her from early morning, until late in the evening, to get here. :(
When she travels to the USA, it takes her a lot less time to get there from Bristol!

I’ve been trying to work out where you might live that needs 3 buses to get to! The bus services here in Pembrokeshire are bad though ?

Right on the west Wales coast, half-way between Cardigan and Aberystwyth :)

It’s utterly gorgeous here, but the public transport system is something that has to be seen to be believed.

It’s not too bad during the school holidays, as extra buses are put on for the benefit of the holidaymakers but, as soon as the holidaymakers go home, it’s back to being bl**dy awful :/

nationalisation of public transport is long overdue. The country needs public service not milch-cows which make a lot of money for a few.
