Astonishingly racist Times cartoon shows terror of Corbyn’s authenticity | The SKWAWKBOX Blog

In the run-up to the EU referendum, the ‘leave’ campaign hammered home the message ‘Take back control’, with particular reference to immigration.

Within hours of the announcement of the result, leading leave campaigners were frantically rowing back on the promise that exit would mean ‘control of our borders’, watering it down to meaningless levels or saying outright that free movement would be required for free trade.

Trust in Establishment politicians is at an all-time low – and with good reason.

This week, the Times – now a ‘Murdoch rag’ but still claiming the gravitas and credibility of a ‘broadsheet’ paper – published an appalling, blatantly racist and xenophobic cartoon. The cartoon shows Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn at the helm of the Mersey Ferry (Labour’s conference this week was held in Liverpool) crammed with ‘generic foreign types’, titled ‘Migrant Ferry Across the Mersey’:

The cartoon is supposed to be an attack on Corbyn’s ‘no false promises on immigration’ statement in his speech to close the conference on Wednesday.

As so often, though, it simply exposes the motives and mindset of the people behind it. The Establishment – in which the Times is embedded as deeply as a tick –is absolutely terrified of Corbyn’s authenticity.

To resort to the basest kind of ‘dog whistle’ propaganda shows just how deeply afraid they are of Jeremy Corbyn’s refusal to treat the electorate as gullible idiots who’ll believe any false promise for long enough for the promisor’s purposes to be achieved.

I totally agree with your comment on the Migrant Ferry across the Mersey cartoon, and its actually worse than the picture of the “swarm’ of migrants which Nigel Farage and Ukip used, just a week before the referendum…..are you in a position to write to the Times and challenge it as you have done in this post?

It is a disgraceful “cartoon” . The trouble with these dog whistle racist pictures is that they tend to embed themselves in peoples minds and resurface when anyone tries to promote an intelligent debate on immigration. Case of a picture being more memorable than a thousand words.

The cartoon is appalling, but your comment on Leave campaigners frantically backtracking is false. Leave have not said they would accept freedom of movement from the eu nations, a bigoted ideation the the mainly white populace of 27 nations have freedom to arrive on our shores whilst rejecting others from around the rest of the world. Leave have said that migration would be based on the qualifications of the whole worlds populace. Your attempt to continue with remains baseless claims that leave are what bigots refer to as racism does you no favours. there is only one race and it is the human race ethnic variations do not make you a separate race, that is a fascist ideation and one on which we have seen far to much killing and other atrocities.

Where in this article do I say anything about what Leave will or will not accept?
It is certainly true that Leave campaigners backpedalled furiously on their own ‘freedom of movement’ claims after the result of the EU referendum – please don’t try to rewrite history.
I wonder why you continue trying to push forward these claims when everybody can look up the facts at the touch of a button.

Apparently not; this particular image seems to be a meme repeated through history.

What a monstrously bigoted cartoon for a supposed broadsheet to publish and gross oblique reference to the drowned dead of so many refugees fleeing death from war. Totally shameful.
