Cameron had cash for Garden Bridge vanity project – but none to spare for the poor
What a fine symbol of Conservative Britain the Garden Bridge project represents!
Former prime minister David Cameron had money to spare for the project, despite the fact that it appears to have no business case (and no southern landing, either) and could leave the public £23 million out of pocket.
Just to put it into perspective, that is enough money to pay the benefits of 3,833 ESA claimants for a year, with change left over.
As the Conservatives are willing to spend so much of our money on a project that, while pretty, has no useful purpose, perhaps we should also fund a pair of placques, to be placed on both the north and south landings.
They could say: “The Conservative Party could have funded benefits for thousands of sick and disabled people, but took away their money and spent it here instead.
“Lives were ruined to pay for this pretty bridge. Remember that, whenever you use it.”
David Cameron personally intervened to approve extra taxpayer funding for London’s controversial Garden Bridge project, it has emerged.
The former prime minister did so against advice from officials, an investigation by the National Audit Office (NAO) found.
The NAO said nearly £23m of taxpayer money was now at risk of being lost.
Transport Minister Lord Ahmad said the government remained supportive of the project.
London mayor Sadiq Khan has ordered a full review of the proposals for the Thames river crossing.

A bridge, is a bridge, is a bridge…..
I wrote to the [new] mayor’s office regarding the bridge and pollution within £ondon in general. The bridge, I said, is unnecessary ad where it will be cited will do little for pollution in £ondon. I suggested looking at building on gardens, paving over our shared green spaces, out of town supermarkets and their associated car parks, grass verges, bus lane routs and their impact on the flow of traffic. I have yet to receive even an acknowledgement and I wrote several months since. There appears to be no joined up thinking, or integrated transport plan, or plan to deal with pollution and its causes, which are not isolated. Charging people to go about their business does nothing for pollution and affects those who can least afford disproportionately. A proper, integrated policy would not only deal with pollution but traffic management, road safety and drainage, which would deal with flooding. We don’t need garden bridge but green spaces where we live and work and there are plenty of examples elsewhere in the world that we could examine. This project is all shirt and no knickers, when knickers are what we need.
While I can appreciate the ‘greening’ of our country, this seems to have little merit in the current economy. You have to ask though, why was the street cleaning on the bridge cancelled, and simply left to overgrow of it’s own accord, the end result seems the same from the illustration.
One wouldn’t expect anything else from a FAILED EX PRIME MINISTER, would one, I this is the nastiest Tory party to have crawled from under the midden.
