Supporting Corbyn: Paul McGann

“Even when he’s gone… these principles will still matter.”

I love it when celebrities get involved in politics, and do it right.

Here’s a video of Paul McGann – yes, the actor from Doctor Who, Withnail and I, Luthor, The Monocled Mutineer (if you can remember that far back) and many, many more – explaining why he joined the Labour Party last year (“I was one of the three-quidders!”) and why he likes Jeremy Corbyn supporters’ group Momentum.

Yes, I like this because I’m a Doctor Who fan. Yes, I like it because I used to see Mr McGann at Bristol Old Vic when I was reviewing plays for a now-defunct local newspaper back in the 1990s.

And yes, I like it because he talks a lot of sense. “There are forces out there that would rather you remain isolated, individual and easily-targetable.” True. “For ordinary people, at this stage, engagement is the first thing.”

And he says something that the Establishment activists who hate Mr Corbyn’s Labour, who want you to believe it is a personality cult, don’t want you to hear: “It ain’t all about Jeremy Corbyn.

“Even when he’s gone, we’ll still be here. And these principles will still matter.”

Hear, hear.

And here’s the video so you can hear it for yourself:

This Writer is not a member of Momentum. The same reactionaries who hate Mr Corbyn would love to tar Vox Political by association with what they want us all to believe is a dangerous band of revolutionaries – or maybe they’d love to tar Momentum by association with this dangerous hard-left (that’s what they’re saying, apparently!) blog.

But Mr McGann makes a pretty persuasive case.

I visit Bristol quite often. If I’m down there next time there’s a Momentum meeting, maybe I’ll pop in and say hello.

    Hard left?
Well I suppose if you will go about saying nice things about JC and write articles about common decency, you are going to get tarred and feathered.
Do any of these critics actually know where the centre ground is or how to get there?

I don’t think so. Thank you for the kind words.
