Of course suicide prevention services are ‘deteriorating’ due to cuts – that’s what Tories want

The Conservative Government has – no doubt – been careful to ensure that suicide prevention services are suffering.

There’s no point launching a revision of sickness and disability benefits, designed to push people into despair and death, if some do-gooder turns up and prevents the intended result from happening, after all.

This is one part of Conservative policy that is remarkably joined-up – unlike that party’s plan to ensure that sick and disabled people are able to take suitable jobs. No effort has been made to encourage businesses into modifying their workplaces to accommodate such employees.

So: No employment opportunities for sick and disabled people seeking work; no help for them when they fall into despair.

As one Vox Political commenter would put it: Aktion T4 rolling along without much ado.

Cuts to the health budget are resulting in suicide prevention and support services deteriorating or being shut down across Britain, the charity Samaritans has warned.

In evidence to MPs, the UK’s leading suicide prevention charity said that its local branches were having meetings cancelled because of a lack of resources, with the situation worsening from even 2014.

Ruth Sutherland, the charity’s chief executive, told the Commons Health Committee on Tuesday that a recent £25m cash injection for mental health services was “too little too late” and “not commensurate with the cost” or benefit of preventing suicides.
