Free Christmas fish and chips for the homeless gives Tories a chance to justify their apathy

Last Updated: December 22, 2016By

While this – and any other initiative like it – is welcome, I can’t help but express concern that it is giving the Conservatives an easy excuse to do nothing themselves.

“It is David Cameron’s ‘Big Society’ in action,” they may claim. “The public is taking up the slack left by government, and it would be wrong for us to interfere.”

The counter-argument is that we pay our taxes on the understanding that government does all it can to ensure that citizens do not fall into homelessness and hunger.

We don’t make that argument often enough and, in the Season of Goodwill, it might be more appropriate than ever to point out that very little goodwill is coming from Westminster.

A chip shop is opening up on Christmas Day to give free turkey dinners to the homeless and elderly.

Brothers Hamid and Asef Faqiri who own and run Classic Fish Bar in Birmingham want to “help those in need and make people in the community happy”.

Asef said he has seen a lot of homeless people in the two years they have been there and always tries to help.

The takeaway dinners will be available from the Erdington High Street shop between 13:00 and 16:00 GMT.

The Tories are happy to see the less well off members of society supporting the disadvantaged, the needy and the homeless, just as long as they and their equally unpleasant extremely wealthy friends don’t have to contribute to society as a whole.

Wow, there are still some compassionate people in this cruel, fascist dump, now that is a Christmas miracle!

Nice Xmas gesture….hope they can manage the influx and the genuine needy are looked after on this special day. Totally agree with your words that it is because of others generosity and large scale volunteer actions and food banks that this gap is being filled …… a growing gap created by this wretched Government.
