Labour expulsion debacle: Is this enough evidence to turn the tables on the culprits?

Last Updated: December 31, 2016By

This treatment of Labour Party members is despicable.

There can be no doubt that anybody receiving a letter like this was excluded from the leadership election purely on an expectation of the way they were going to vote.

It indicates that the suspensions and expulsions were an attempt to rig the election by members of the NEC, in collusion with the party’s discredited general secretary, Iain McNicol.

This Writer would suggest that it is enough evidence to allow the rest of us to demand the removal of those who took part in the exercise – if they have not already been removed in NEC elections earlier in 2016.

If you are a Labour Party member, and you have had enough of this treatment, take this evidence to your branch party and then your constituency party, and write a motion to rid the NEC of the malcontents.

For months now, the SKWAWKBOX has covered the disenfranchisement of Labour members via arbitrary suspensions and even expulsions, as well as the dismissive, abusive and even incriminating way in which those have been lifted once the leadership election was over. The conclusion that they were done with the aim of preventing Corbyn supporters voting in that election is almost impossible to dismiss.

Now, 3 full months after the close of the election, you could be forgiven for thinking that the debacle could be consigned to the past, at least until the next contest – but you’d be wrong.

[Above] is a letter received in the last couple of days by a Liverpool Labour member who had been not merely suspended but completely expelled from the party – for 5 years, with no right of appeal.

You’d think that such an expulsion must mean some serious misdeed had taken place – or at least the reasonable belief in one. You’d be wrong about that, too:

No reasons for the exclusion decision, nor any explanation given for its reversal beyond a ‘review’. Basically, ‘oops, oh well’ – ‘apologies for any inconvenience’, with no recognition of the serious, fundamental wrong that such an arbitrary removal, not only of voting rights but of actual membership, represents in a party that claims to be democratic.

it perfectly conveys the dismissiveness with which the party bureaucracy is treating members – as does the rote wording, which is clearly a template that has been used for all members similarly affect. That such template letters are still being sent out 3 months after the event underlines the scale of the disenfranchisement.

It’s staggeringly presumptuous as well: “we’ve let you back in now, so get back to campaigning”, essentially.

…and on and on and on it goes with the NEC sticking their fingers in their ears and going la la la hoping that people who were suspended or expelled for the most flimsy of reasons will simply melt away. There will be no chance of that as far as I am concerned. I have an investigation meeting on 6 January with David Hagendyk (pronounced Hagen – like the ice cream and Dyke like Dick Van Dyke) Welsh Labour General Secretary. In the NEC committee meeting notes of Nov 2016, Mr Hagendyk stated that 57 members had been suspended in Wales; 23 of those were not deemed serious and had their suspension lifted with a warning (bearing in mind the suspension was lifted AFTER the leadership election and the warning is to lie on file indefinitely – even convicted criminals are deemed to have their conviction spent after 5 – 7 years within the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, but not so Labour members it seems) The remaining 34 (which includes me) are subject to further investigation. So as someone said to me … 0% of the 57 allegations were deemed unfounded – that is quite remarkable isn’t it! If the Crown Prosecution Service was as successful, they’d be high fiving each other until they dropped with exhaustion. If Hagendyk thinks that meeting with me will be a walk in the park, he’s got a surprise coming because I will be taking no prisoners!

I was also expelled for 5 years, was sent an email a few days after voting for Corbyn, reason given
    Dear John,
It has been brought to our attention with supporting evidence that you have publicly
supported the Green Party on social media including a post on 10th July 2016

I never made such a posting

    Received another email this month

“You were written to during this summers’ Leadership Election and informed that you had been automatically excluded from membership of the Labour Party. The Party has now reviewed a selection of the auto-exclusions actioned and we are very sorry but, we found that some exclusions, including yours, had been implemented in error.
Please accept our apology for the error that ended your membership and for any concern and inconvenience experienced by you because of it”
So apparently it was all a silly mistake?

Yes indeed – one that cost you your vote in the leader election.
I do hope you will not let this matter rest.

Totally unbelievable. And they call this democracy? The National Executive
Committees who instigated this cunning plan needs a root ‘n branch clean up much sooner than later. This is much more than just a few bad apples this is a total crock of poo.

    The usual ‘apology’ – shamology!

This has to change, not democracy at all. We need to protest, not just one single party, but the whole of the UK electorate. We all need our voices heard, those on the left, the right and the centre because we all count. Just seems like some count more than others. Nothing changes unless we make it happen.

This is a Labour Party issue, though.
