A protester says he has been repeatedly abused and attacked while camping in Leicester’s Jubilee Square over Christmas to raise awareness of violence against homeless people.

James McLean pitched tents on the lawns of the £4 million square December 19 declaring he intended to stay until Boxing Day.

However when Leicester City Council served legal papers on him saying he would be prosecuted for trespass he resolved to stay put until his court appearance on January 18.

He says he and homeless people who have joined him in the encampment, outside the BBC Radio Leicester offices, have been targeted by members of the public – largely groups of youths and young men.

Mr McLean, who is not homeless himself, said: “Most days someone shouts “Get a job” at us.

“There have been six threats to burn the tents down and I have been attacked eight times by members of the public – and all this over Christmas.”

He said he had reported ‘a couple’ of the incidents to the police.

“Some rough sleepers have had to leave because they have been so scared.

Well after 6 years of camerons endless mantra of “for hardworking people”, and the biased broadcasting of benefits street there is a large proportion of people who think anyone not working is just an idle sponger living off their hard work, and they could easily get a job and a home. Never mind the sick incapacitated disabled, and those who lost their homes through divorce but are still expected to pay the mortgage.

These are Iain Duncan Smith’s disciples no doubt, people who think a “hard day’s work” is an easily achievable remedy to all of life’s problems.

    Tory scum.
