Labour MP tweets in support of Tory. Will he be purged from the party as so many others were?

This ReTweet by Labour MP Wes Streeting shows him supporting a view taken by a member of another political party, in direct contradiction of current Labour membership rules.

Thousands of rank-and-file Labour members were “purged” from the party – their memberships either suspended or revoked – in the run-up to last year’s leadership election, on the basis of claims that they supported the views of other parties (mostly the Green Party, which often promotes ideas that are attractive to – or the same as – Labour’s.

Mr Streeting has chosen to support a Conservative – a member of Labour’s natural political enemy. While the sentiment expressed is one with which we can all agree (right?), it is unacceptable that Mr Streeting has chosen to support a Conservative MP’s comments. Such an action is banned under current Labour Party rules.

So when will Mr Streeting receive his email from Labour General Secretary Iain McNicol?

Today? Tomorrow?

Or does Mr McNicol take the view that right-wing Labour MPs are somehow exempt from the rules that govern the rest of the party?

Erm, a load of people have just been murdered. Sometimes tribal loyalties have to take second place.

There’s always an excuse for letting the nasty people have their way, isn’t there?
As I mentioned in the article, tweets in support of other parties resulted in suspensions/expulsions – no matter what they were about. This should not be treated any differently, no matter what the subject matter.

I’m siding with Tim here. He couldn’t have put it better.

There’s no need to instigate partisan politics when in mourning of a tragedy. To fire a man for agreeing with someone else from a rival faction on an unrelated topic – one that you even admit is objectively horrible – on the basis of allegiance alone is incredibly petty and if applied as you recommend would do nothing but hurt an already weak Labour further.

If anything, you should be asking why he felt the need to simply retweet a rival MP’s words when he could’ve just written his own thoughts on the matter, but even then that’s neither here or there.

This sort of childish lynching erodes the integrity of politics.

The arch-Tory grandee and former Conservative Minister Jonathon Aitken, who served seven months of an eighteen month custodial sentence for perjury, is actually and factually godfather to Dianne Abbott’s son.

(The son you might remember she sent to a private fee paying school despite lifelong opposition to such educational institutions, maintained to the present day, despite purchasing a private education herself for her boy. )

Shouldn’t Dianne be “purged” too, Mike?

For having such close Conservative friends and associations?

Has she made public pronouncements in support of Conservative policies/statements?

Given the substance of the tweet it is difficult to say he was acting wrongly unless of course Labour support terrorist attacks, maybe if there was more consensus rather than knee jerk rejection of what other political groups are saying we would be better off.

Well its what I expect from some PLP members, if the party was run properly this dross would be out on his bum, but no its only real members they do that to
