Disabled widow banned from luncheon club because she uses mobility scooter

Last Updated: January 27, 2017By

Jean Sleath was banned from attending a village luncheon club [Image: SWNS.com].

Jean Sleath suffers from chronic arthritis and heart problems which means she needs a wheelchair or scooter to get around.

She has attended a weekly luncheon club at the village hall in Heckington, near Sleaford, Lincs., for several months but last week she was told she was no longer welcome.

The village hall, run by a charitable trust, says Mrs Sleath’s scooter poses a health risk because it could block the exits in the event of a fire.

The legislation requires owners to take action if there is a significant risk to people. As retired enforcement officer I would contend that this is certainly not a health risk in addition provided it is sensibly parked it is not a safety risk either. Perhaps the lady should start asking questions about accessibility to the hall under the disability rights legislation.

It’s nothing new. Even churches do that. I had it happen to me several years ago. We’ll all have to learn to pop round our neighbour’s for a cuppa and a chat again, like in the old days. Much more sociable.

I wish it happened here, Mike. Everyone is so insular. I was trying to track down where the postman had left a package for me a few days ago. Asked everybody I met in the street where a house number was. Nobody knew. It’s all I ever get when I ask for help: “I dunno”. I don’t bother asking any more. That’s how it’s been for the last 20-odd years!

And so the cull continues, aided and abetted by those who are rationing access to their services. Now people are finding out that Charity can decide who is deserving and who is not. We used to have rights, now we have petty tyrants.

This country is almost dead thanks to nasty Tories.
