Trump’s travel ban is not just divisive but a gift for the jihadists

Last Updated: February 3, 2017By

This is an article by Patrick Cockburn, mentioned by Nick Hewer on the BBC’s Question Time on Thursday evening (February 2). It makes interesting reading with regard to Donald Trump’s travel sanctions against people from certain mainly-Muslim countries.

The list of countries whose citizens are temporarily banned from entering the US will make cheerful reading for IS leaders because it includes Iraq, whose army has been fighting the jihadists for three months in a savage battle for control of Mosul.

Also targeted by the Trump administration is Iran, a close ally of Russia as well as of the Iraqi and Syrian governments, whose co-operation will be needed if IS is to be eliminated.

Al Qaeda and IS have always hoped to provoke the US into inflicting communal punishments on Muslims in general — and Trump has just played straight into their hands.

Trump may be a millionaire/billionaire, but he is not a particularly intelligent individual. He appears to be driven by hatred and bigotry. Very worrying that such a thoroughly unpleasant and unpredictable character can hold such power on the world stage.
