Good Friday Agreement architect questions UK rhetoric on Irish border | Left Foot Forward

Last Updated: February 13, 2017By

Have Theresa May, David Davis and the rest been lying about their plans for the post-Brexit border between the UK and Ireland – putting the Good Friday agreement and the Northern Irish peace process in jeopardy?

Your thoughts are encouraged.

Theresa May and Irish Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, have been at pains to ensure that [a hard] border [between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic] does not reappear.Such soothing words however have been dealt a significant blow following an intervention by one of the architects of the Good Friday Agreement.

In an interview with the Observer published over the weekend, the former Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has warned of a change of tone coming from Whitehall that poses significant difficulties for the Northern Ireland/Irish border.

He told the paper:

“[May] seems to be switching her language. She’s saying not that there’ll be no border, but that the border won’t be as difficult as to create problems. I worry far more about what’s going to happen with that. It will take away the calming effects [of an open border]. Any attempt to try to start putting down border posts, or to man [it] in a physical sense as used to be the case, would be very hard to maintain, and would create a lot of bad feeling.”

The most up to date statement of UK Government policy, within the Brexit White Paper commits Ministers to seeking a as seamless and frictionless a border as possible between Northern Ireland and Ireland.

The Tories from my point of view always look to stir up trouble, the more turmoil they create the less time taken to observe what they are doing behind our backs.

The name of the game is to be ever alert.

Another step towards a united Ireland. That would at least be a positive outcome. Either there are full border controls, which could have extremely serious consequences, or there are no real border controls, which makes a farce of May’s Brexit. It seems to me that May and her hard-line cronies don’t want the public to know about the serious problems associated with their lunatic so-called Brexit.

Possibly, May’s new BBF in the US of A has suggested a Mexican type wall, and the Irish can pay for it….just saying…..
