There’s only one reason an election candidate would fail to appear at a hustings after making a commitment to attend – something more important to their campaign has arisen.

In UKIP leader Paul Nuttall’s case, this has to be the small matter of saving his campaign for Stoke-on-Trent Central altogether, after his claim to have lost “close personal friends” at the Hillsborough disaster was proved false.

His website, where the claim had been published, has been taken down – but let’s not forget that he himself is on the record as having protested strongly when allegations that it was a lie were first made.

It strikes This Writer, therefore, that Mr Nuttall’s “party meetings” are “essential”, not only to save his campaign but also his credibility and that of his political party.

The question is, in this age of fake news and a gullible public, will we believe whatever story he contrives next?

The Ukip leader, Paul Nuttall, has been criticised for failing to turn up at a hustings in Stoke-on-Trent Central, the constituency where he is contesting next week’s byelection.

Nuttall gave just an hour’s notice that he was pulling out of the event on Thursday that had been organised by business representatives in the area.

He claimed he needed to attend “essential party meetings” before a Ukip conference.

Meanwhile, Nuttall’s personal website was offline on Thursday, displaying a message saying that the site had been temporarily taken down. It comes in the wake of his admission that the claim he had lost “close, personal friends” at the 1989 Hillsborough football disaster was untrue.

So when are you going to print something about the dodgy Labour candidate then?

Nuttall and his political party are irrelevant in post-Brexit Britain. The Tory government, for all intents and purposes, has become UKIP.

Probably busy thinking up yet more lies and distortions.
