Available affordable housing fell by half in a year – under the Conservatives

Last Updated: March 3, 2017By

The government released new figures on affordable housing in England on 2 March. And its findings prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Tories are succeeding in creating a country in which only the rich can survive.

In 2015-16, social rent housing such as council housing was down around a third from the year before. 2014-15 saw 9,570 additional social rent homes. While in 2015-16, councils and relevant organisations only added 6,800.

Considered on its own, this drop may not seem particularly scandalous. Because due to funding cuts implemented under the Coalition government, many housing associations changed the status of their stock. Upon renewal of tenancies, housing associations converted their social rent housing into affordable rent housing. This allowed them to charge tenants higher rents.

But it follows then that additional affordable rent housing figures should increase. And that’s not the case at all. Additional affordable rent housing actually dropped by even more than social rent housing. In 2014-15, relevant entities created 40,830 affordable rent homes. Whereas 2015-16 only saw 16,550 provided. That’s a decrease of more than half.

Intermediate rent units, where tenants pay around 20% less than market rate rents, did increase. But overall, all affordable and social rented housing, combined with affordable home ownership, fell by over half on the year before.

The main concern of Tories is to look after wealthy landlords. Allow them to exploit poorer people and make millions at the expense of the working classes.

The sale of the council housing stock, so more people could own their own home, how many still do? lead to this problem now you get people buying to rent housing to pay off the mortgages on those houses and a little extra to cover the upkeep, so costs have risen.
