Roasting for Rudd over police pay rise

Home Secretary Amber Rudd took a roasting from the Police Federation for refusing to end the one per cent cap on public sector pay.

Federation chair Steve White took her to task for supporting the cap, as she hypocritically prepared to give a prize at the Police Bravery Awards.

“Thank you for agreeing to present an award later,” he said, adding – to huge cheers and applause: “Would that be the 2.8 per cent pay award we asked for?”

Nurses and teachers have already been told they will be getting one per cent for the fifth year in a row.

Meanwhile, police staff, who are employed separately from officers, renewed a demand for a proper pay rise as the GMB, Unison and Unite teamed up to say the nation’s 30,000 police staff had born the brunt of austerity for too long.

They say said wages had risen by 4.2 per cent in six years while the cost of living has increased by 20 per cent. Their demand was only five per cent, so embattled prime minister Theresa May can’t say it’s a bad deal.

And, after Tory councillors in Kent voted themselves a whopping 15 per cent pay rise, she no longer has a leg to stand on.
