Remember when the Tories didn’t bother to vote on an Opposition Day motion to end the public sector pay cap? Or on an Opposition Day motion to stop the increase in student tuition fees?

This Site – and many others, I’m sure – suggested that it is now Tory policy not to vote on Opposition motions and not to take any notice of the results of such votes.

I said it showed contempt for democracy and democratic debate.

Now, Commons Speaker John Bercow has approved an application by Liberal Democrat Alistair Carmichael for an emergency debate on the Tories’ behaviour:

It seems Mrs May and her failing government have tried to be clever – dodging democracy in order to avoid looking bad – but this has again backfired.

Now they must explain their behaviour. And what if their comments aren’t good enough?
