Poorest hit hardest by years of Tory austerity, says human rights watchdog

The poorest in society are set to lose around 10% of their income due to years of cruel Tory austerity, the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has revealed in a damning new report.

The Commission has published an independent report into the impact of changes to tax, social security and public spending, rubbishing Tory claims to be “working for everyone” and warning Government policies “actually make the most disadvantaged people in society financially worse off”.

According to the report the poorest have lost 10% of their incomes, while the richest in society have only lost 1%.

The EHRC is now calling on the Government to undertake a “cumulative impact assessments of all tax and social security policies ahead of the 2018 budget”, adding the Government should also “reconsider existing policies that are contributing to negative financial impacts for those who are most disadvantaged”.

Some of the main findings from the report include:

  • black households will face a 5% loss of income (more than double the loss for white households)
  • families with a disabled adult will see a £2,500 reduction of income per year (this is £1,000 for non-disabled families
  • families with a disabled adult and a disabled child will face a £5,500 reduction of income per year (again, compared to £1,000 for non-disabled families)
  • lone parents will struggle with a 15% loss of income (the losses for all other family groups are between 0 and 8%)
and women will suffer a £940 annual loss (more than double the loss for men)
  • the biggest average losses by age group, across men and women, are experienced by the 65 to 74 age group (average losses of around £1,450 per year) and the 35 to 44 age group (average losses of around £1,250 per year)

… but the Tories have taken the poorest out of tax, altogether! The Economy is booming! We have highest levels of employment since the mid 1970s… What else do they tell us? I bet that even the Tooth Faerie is on Benefits! Actually, it has probably been sanctioned and can’t even get into a food bank! On what planet are these people living on? Every week, the same drivel on Question Time, as if the more that they say it, the more people will believe it. The truth is the truth, even if NOONE believes it and lies are still lies, even if EVERYONE believes them. The Tories need to come to terms with that one, instead of telling us all that £abour cause the global financial crisis, when it was Tory free-market economics that have enabled them and their rich friends to become even more wealthy, whilst the rest of us have had to put up with their Austerity! If one Tory would face reality, I might even manage to crack a smile.
