The RAC is among the companies keeping costs down with bogus self-employment

Last Updated: December 5, 2017By

What a revolting development this is.

Curiously enough, the article quoted below arrived on This Writer’s desktop at the same time as the following tweet:

Together, I think the pair provide a terrifyingly accurate snapshot of working life here in the UK in 2017.

No wonder EU citizens are leaving en masse.

The RAC Motoring Services Ltd, a subsidiary of RAC Ltd, not only benefits from Britain’s increasingly casualised labour market and gig economy but it also keeps its costs down by charging its direct sales agents hundreds of pounds a month to work for them.

Just like Deliveroo riders, Uber drivers and McDonald’s restaurant staff, the men and women who sell the RAC’s products and services are classified as self-employed and are therefore not entitled to statutory sick, maternity or holiday pay, statutory minimum wage, break times, guaranteed hours or shifts.

Instead of signing a contract, these individuals sign “an agreement” with the RAC to “act as [its] non-exclusive representative in an area defined by [their] sales manager…”

Businesses have a “BETTER IN MY POCKET THAN THE WORKERS.” Mentality. A modern car seldom breaks down if regularly serviced, yet they charge hundreds for a peace of mind service rather than a pay to use service, it is the same with any manufacturer they rip you off with £100+ an hour call out charges then £50+ an hour labour.
