Here’s how Israel’s mouthpieces are spinning the ICJ ruling – and how to debunk it

Spokespeople for the Israeli government and military are trying to claim that the International Court of Justice found in that country’s favour because it did not support a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza but instead called on Israel to cease any activities that may possibly correspond to definitions of genocide:

Note that Israel’s liar-in-chief, Eylon Levy, claimed that the ICJ called for Israel to abandon any rescue of the hostages taken by Hamas on October 7 last year. This is a lie. The ICJ made a very clear demand for the hostages to be returned to Israel, safe and well.

So there you have it: Israel’s spokespeople and mouthpieces want you to think the ICJ ruling was a victory for them.

The fact is different. Here’s how you debunk the claims of these distortionists:

Indeed. Please spread this response as widely as you find necessary to combat the falsehood.

UK response to ICJ ruling: cut funding to agency helping Palestinian refugees

Rishi Sunak and Benjamin Netanyahu: is this the reason the UK responded to the ICJ’s ruling over genocide charges against Israel by suspending funding of aid to Palestinian refugees, rather than suspending arms exports to Israel?

The UK’s Tory government has responded to a ruling by the International Court of Justice that Israel is now on trial for genocide – by cutting aid to the UN agency that provides help for Palestinian refugees.

Is that not the correct way to view the cessation of funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which works to provide health care, education and other humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria and employs around 13,000 people in Gaza?

The announcement follows allegations – from that bastion of dishonesty, the Israeli government – that people working for the UNRWA were involved in the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel.

According to the BBC,

Mark Regev said there was information showing teachers working in UNRWA schools had “openly celebrated” the 7 October attacks.

He also referred to an Israeli hostage who, on her release, said she had been “held in the house of someone who worked for UNRWA”.

“They have a union which is controlled by Hamas and I think it’s high time that the UN investigated these links between UNRWA and Hamas,” he added.

This Writer would not trust that man to tell me the correct time.

But his claims have been supported by the fact that the UNRWA has launched an investigation into them – and sacked several staff before it has had a chance to report back.

The UK joins the US, Australia, Italy, Canada and Finland, who have already suspended funding to the agency.

The UNRWA’s former chief spokesperson, Christopher Gunness, said the suspension of funding was disproportionate and could only lead to further suffering:

“One million displaced people are currently taking refuge in and around UNRWA buildings. They are the ones who will suffer as a result of this decision,” said Mr Gunness, adding: “The curtailing of UNRWA services will also destabilise the region at a time when Western governments are trying to contain a regional conflagration.”

This is a view that is widely-held on the social media:

But what should the UK have done?

Well…

Would that not have been the more obvious choice?

International Court of Justice imposes ‘interim measures’ to stop Israeli genocide in Gaza

The International Court of Justice, where the ruling was given.

The International Court of Justice has ruled that there is a prima facie case that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and has imposed interim measures to prevent it.

These measures are:

Israel shall take all measures to prevent commission of all acts within the scope of article 2 of the Genocide Convention: killing Palestinians, causing serious bodily or mental harm, inflicting conditions considered to bring about harm, and preventing births.

Israel shall ensure with immediate effect that its military does not commit any of these acts.

Israel shall take all measures to prevent and punish the direct and public incitement of genocide.

Israel shall take measures to ensure the provision of urgently needed basic services and assistance to address the adverse conditions of life faced by people in the Gaza Strip – humanitarian aid.

Israel shall take effective measures to prevent destruction and preserve evidence of genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Israel shall submit a report to the court on all measures taken to give effect to this order, within one month. South Africa, which brought the case against Israel, will then have an opportunity to submit its observations on Israel’s report.

The court cannot enforce its ruling – and Israel will almost certainly ignore it altogether.

But the ruling remains significant.

It means a court representing the international community has said it is possible that agents of Israel are committing the most heinous crime known to humanity – genocide.

Other nations that are signed up to the Genocide Convention should now support that finding and exert pressure on Israel to comply with the interim measures that have been stated.

Those include the United Kingdom, where both the Tory government and Labour opposition have vociferously supported Israel since the current conflict began on October 7.

In other words, Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer are now in a tricky position.

The country they chose to back is now in danger of being convicted of appalling crimes against humanity – that they have supported.

What will they say now and how will they justify what they have said in the past?

After nearly five years, it’s time to end my court crowdfunder

Many of you may remember This Writer was involved in a large court case, involving a nationally-known TV ‘celebrity’, for which I raised funds via the CrowdJustice website.

After nearly five years, and with donations of more than a quarter of a million pounds, it is time to end this campaign.

My legal team has contacted me to say they are happy to close my account now, meaning there is nothing more for me to pay them and no reason to continue asking for donations.

Buy Cruel Britannia in print here. Buy the Cruel Britannia ebook here. Or just click on the image!

So it is time for me to thank everybody who supported me during my long and arduous legal battle – more than 11,000 of you.

Although I didn’t win the case, the fact that it took place made many thousands more people aware of the issues I had raised and allowed them to form their own opinions about my opponent.

So it seems that, in this case, it wasn’t necessary to win. The important thing was that I stood up for what I believed was right – and, in so doing, gave others the chance to decide what they believed as well.

This has been a long and exceptionally difficult campaign, and it would not have achieved anything at all without you. Everything I did achieve, I achieved with your help.

Thank you.

A German government is supporting genocide – again. Has it learned nothing?

Germany has made a statement in support of Israel’s defence against the genocide charge it has faced in the International Court of Justice.

The hypocrisy of a nation that – having committed the most infamous genocide in history – supports another nation doing the same has not gone unnoticed.

Buy Cruel Britannia in print here. Buy the Cruel Britannia ebook here. Or just click on the image!

It would be easy to say that Germany’s stance is based on historic guilt over the Holocaust – but it seems there is in fact a business interest informing this statement:

Sadly, it seems Germany’s statement is doubly unacceptable because it has a history of genocides including against one of the nations that supported South Africa’s charge:

The full statement is well worth reading.

I look forward to finding out how the German government digs its way out of this hole.

#ICJ4Israel: the evidence is all in. Why did the BBC broadcast only Israel’s side? [STRONG LANGUAGE]

The International Court of Justice.

Western media organisations appear to have shown unacceptable bias in favour of Israel by choosing to broadcast only that country’s submissions to the International Court of Justice in response to being charged with genocide, and not those of South Africa.

Commentators on ‘X’ quickly had their say:

Buy Cruel Britannia in print here. Buy the Cruel Britannia ebook here. Or just click on the image!

If you want to know what Israel had to say, here it is. Apologies for the profanity in the comment but it’s indicative:

TL;DR? Try this:

Meanwhile, the Israeli government has been trying to sway opinions by buying advertising space on Google to put forward lies about South Africa’s case:

South Africa could not have advanced a blood libel because nothing in its case suggested that Israel is using Christian (it has to be Christian) children’s blood to bake Passover bread – which is the only way a blood libel can be defined.

South Africa’s case, being unbroadcast by the western news networks, was a bit harder to locate – but here are a few reports on it:

The Israeli government tried to undermine the evidence with another false claim:

And, of course, while all this was going on, Israel’s slaughter of Gazans continued:

The International Court of Justice has now heard all the evidence and will make a decision on whether to institute provisional measures for Israel to stop military operations, allow in humanitarian aid, punish anyone in the military who has broken international laws of warfare, allow in international observers and to keep the court updated on how that’s going.

Let’s hope the decision comes before all of Gaza has been levelled.

Demonstrations at International Court of Justice as it hears genocide charge against Israel

This is what a holocaust looks like (or at least one interpretation): and as the artist intends, it might accurately refer to what Israel is visiting upon Gaza now.

Demonstrators supporting both Gaza and Israel clashed outside the International Court of Justice as it began the first of two days of hearings after South Africa charged Israel with genocide.

Palestinians marched with banners collecting the names of people known to have been killed:

Israel’s supporters set up a screen with images of some of the people they say are still being held hostage by Hamas. This is not a good enough justification for the murder of nearly 30,000 innocent people, including women and children, This Writer believes.

Buy Cruel Britannia in print here. Buy the Cruel Britannia ebook here. Or just click on the image!

Inside the court, South Africa’s representative delivered its case that Israel’s actions “are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group”:

The BBC has reported:

It says Israel’s actions include “killing Palestinians in Gaza, causing them serious bodily and mental harm, and inflicting on them conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction”.

It calls for “provisional measures” to be implemented by the court as a matter of urgency, including that Israel cease all military activities in Gaza.

Israel has defended its actions in Gaza, saying it is responding to Hamas’s deadly attacks on 7 October, but speaking in court on Thursday, South Africa’s Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said no attack “can provide justification for or defend breaches of the [Genocide] Convention”.

Israel is a signatory to the Genocide Convention of 1948, which defines genocide and commits states to prevent it.

South Africa’s case has won widespread support, including from 11 national governments:

Sadly the United Kingdom is not one of them.

But UK politician Jeremy Corbyn is with the South African delegation and has published a video clip explaining the significance of what is happening, alongside former South African MP Andrew Feinstein. He also called for UK citizens to take part in demonstrations supporting Gaza on Saturday:

And while all this is going on, the slaughter in Gaza continues:

Israel will deliver its submissions to the court tomorrow (January 12).

Israel is resorting to insults to answer #ICJ4Israel genocide charges

A leaked cable from the Israeli Foreign Ministry suggests that that country is calling for foreign governments that support it to put “diplomatic pressure” on the International Court of Justice to drop its investigation into whether Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

The cable requests “an immediate and unequivocal public statement along the following lines: To publicly and clearly state that [COUNTRY-NAME] rejects the outragest, absurd and baseless allegations made against Israel”.

Note the use of the archaic term “outragest”, which

makes the request sound melodramatic, and lends it an unhealthy note of incredulity, as though the incredulity is the only substitute the Israelis can find for a real case,

according to Martin Odoni in his Critique Archives article on the tactic.

He writes:

The hope appears to be to get a collection of statements from other world leaders expressing similar incredulity, in order to make it look like the legality of Israel’s actions is an objective fact, and not a grossly-selective interpretation of International Law. These statements may prove inadmissible in the court, but they will still get a lot of air-time in the media, and are therefore bound to exert at least some pressure on the Justices.

Israel’s only answer, in short, is to behave like a nation-state yob, and try to reduce the court proceedings to a farce of name-calling and bullying by media. That Israel can only protect its ruthless military strategy from an injunction by effectively corrupting the legal process through politicking says everything we need to know. It is almost trial-by-media, and it is the unofficial confirmation on Israel’s part that its aim really is genocide. Were it not, it would keep proceedings strictly in-court.

That is an argument that makes perfect sense to This Writer.

If Israel tries to use the tactic described here in court, I hope South Africa’s lawyers make mincemeat of it.

#ICJ4Israel: Jeremy Corbyn to join South Africa’s delegation accusing Israel of genocide

Corbyn and Israel: some might say his decision to join the South African delegation accusing that country of genocide is courageous, considering the years in which he was falsely accused of anti-Semitism.

Jeremy Corbyn is to join the South African government’s delegation accusing Israel of genocide at the International Court of Justice tomorrow (January 11).

According to AP News,

South Africa’s Justice Ministry said Corbyn was one of a number of “senior political figures from progressive political parties and movements across the globe” who will join the South African delegation at the Hague in the Netherlands for two days of preliminary hearings which begin on Thursday.

Buy Cruel Britannia in print here. Buy the Cruel Britannia ebook here. Or just click on the image!

South Africa brought the case against Israel last month, accusing it of intending “to destroy Palestinians in Gaza,” and asked the U.N.’s top court to order Israel to halt its attacks. Israel rejected South Africa’s allegations of genocide “with disgust” and said it will defend itself at the court.

Corbyn was the only one of those foreign political figures in its delegation named by the South African government.

He will go to The Hague fresh from shaming the UK’s Tory government in the House of Commons earlier this week:

Of course, the UK’s Tory government refused to support South Africa.

Despite the concerns mentioned by Foreign Secretary David Cameron (“Lord”!), Rishi Sunak’s gang of bandits fully support the genocide – probably because they think it will generate money for them. Sadly, Keir Starmer’s Labour Party also supports it, probably for the same reason.

The hearings begin at 9am (UK time), and you can watch them using the link below:

#ICJ: Israel plans to defend genocide accusation – by JUSTIFYING its Gaza genocide

The International Court of Justice: this building in The Hague is where the hearings will take place.

If this is true, it will not go the way Israel’s government is hoping.

The International Court of Justice is to hold hearings on Thursday and Friday (January 11 and 12) into whether measures should be imposed to prevent Israel from committing acts of genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

It has been claimed that, in its defence, Israel intends to screen a propaganda film composed of clips from bodycams and other recording equipment used by Hamas members during their October 7 incursion into that country.

The film is said to be harrowing, but…

Indeed. The film will not show that Israel is not committing genocidal acts. Nor will it show that any Palestinians committed acts of genocide against Israel, as suggested by that country’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu:

The very thought is ridiculous. Israel is one of the most heavily-armed, militaristic nations in the world and Gaza doesn’t even have an army.

Buy Cruel Britannia in print here. Buy the Cruel Britannia ebook here. Or just click on the image!

Here’s the ICJ’s statement on the hearings:

And here’s how one commentator thinks they’ll turn out:

The case against Israel has been brought by South Africa, with support from some other countries but notably not the UK – despite demonstrations in support of Gaza and Palestine taking place, apparently on a weekly basis.

Sentiment among the general public is overwhelmingly in support of the innocent people of Gaza who are being slaughtered in the Israeli genocide there.

But Rishi Sunak and his Tory government, supported by Keir Starmer and his right-wing version of the Labour Party, have refused to back the ICJ action.

Fortunately, there is one member of the UK’s Parliament who has been prepared to speak up:

Jeremy Corbyn – always on the right side of history.

The hearings are on Thursday and Friday, and The Hague is one hour ahead of the UK, meaning if you want to use the link above to watch them, you will need to do so from 9am onwards.
