Bernard Ingham, the Press Office under Thatcher and Mussolini and the Fascist Spin City

Here’s an antidote to claims by the right that New Labour poisoned the well of political news by introducing ‘spin’. It seems these tactics go back at least to the Wars of the Roses, and were very popular with Margaret Thatcher, whose government ensured that its supporters got to own the major newspapers, and who actually made sure a dissenting TV station was closed down.

And that’s why we aren’t seeing a contempory version of Boys from the Blackstuff to bring into the popular perspective, to set in the middle of the Overton window, exactly how bad the situation is for people on benefits now.. It wouldn’t be shown now as the predators own all the media.
