Banned from TV Under Thatcher: Maggie’s MIlitant Tendency

Last Updated: October 2, 2013By

Infiltration of a mainstream party by an extremist organisation that would otherwise never see power? Unthinkable! That would mean, say, the Conservatives might infiltrate Labour in order to prevent left-wing policies from ever seeing a day in Parliament again! That would NEVER happen, would it, Labour neoliberals!
The Spitting Image clip is fun, too.

This isn’t news. The Monday Club was thrown out of the Conservative Party some years ago due to that organisation’s views on immigration and race relations (they called for the repeal of the Race Relations Acts which are now incorporated into the Equalities Act and the encouragement of “voluntary” repatriation). The now deceased Lady Jane Birdwood was a member of the Party and was active in the long since disbanded Racial Preservation Society, her own organisation Choice which called for the repatriation of non-white people and in a number of other far-right organisations. On the other hand at least one Conservative MP won damages due to false alegations regarding his extremist associations. There are extremists in both the Conservative and Labour Party but both contain many decent individuals also.

This blog isn’t news – it’s opinion. Recently a few people have expressed the opinion that one (or more) of our most popular political organisation may be suffering infiltration from another, which made the Beastrabban article worth reblogging here.

Yes the reblog was interesting. I guess though as someone who’s degree is in politics that I assumed that this was relatively well known to people (the fact that both major parties have their extremists I mean). Back in the 1980’s I recall reading an article about Tory Action and on the other side of the coin I was well aware as someone who grew up in Liverpool of the activities of Labour’s Militant Tendency under one Derek Hattan.

These things are common knowledge for about as long as they are being covered by the mainstream news media. Afterwards, they become the province of university courses, historical books or TV documentaries. It’s always useful to give people a reminder every now and then.
