That’s rich (please excuse the pun)? The evil party cuts everyone and services to the bone, and then blame the poor. It seems to be much easier to blame the weakest instead of looking at their own policies!

What I would like to know, is what are the coalition’s alternative to foodbanks? People starving to death? More genocide? words are failing me now.

Their alternative is the oldest one known in history – begging. That’s it! That’s all !!!

This is a typical tory stratagem, designed to demonise poor people and divert people’s attention away from the fact that many families’ incomes are now so low that they are forced to turn to foodbanks for assistance – and this definitely includes people who are working full-time, though often on low paid zero hours “contracts”. The real disgrace is that in the world’s sixth wealthiest nation we even have food banks at all. My suggestion to the Labour politicians is that they press their leadership to adopt policies which will ensure decent income levels for all and an end to any need at all for food banks.

  3. We all know that the bulk of people visiting food banks are people in work and poor pensioners.

But the Tories cannot admit to that for political reasons, because once it becomes a truth that welfare and pension reform is causing starvation, then the whatsit hits the fan.

I cannot understand why Labour has not used that to hammer the Tories?

This was a reply in a local government website about hungry kids – that Rickets is only caused by lack of sunlight when this man agreed Rickets needs milk and other foods for the Vitamin D needed to prevent Rickets:
What is causing rickets is not malnutrition caused by poverty
but parental ignorance perpetuated by broken, unsupportive families, …
and, yes, some people who are unready and/or unfit to be parents having children (funded wholly by the state).
A more judgmental welfare approach is what’s needed, not more hand-outs.

So all working families are lumped together by the Tories, with the tiny minority in society of severely addicted drug or alcoholic addicts!

As these addicts have a high mortality rate and their kids get taken into care, the propaganda obviously does not stack up aright.

Poor pensioners go hungry themselves, so can’t help even their own grandchildren, on one of the lowest state pensions in the developed world.

Half of women are within the working poor or early retired as most usual means of Austerity public sector job cuts on low works pensions (average £2,800 for women – 2013 figure).

You can get your state pension payout and remain in work, but this option has been taken from women since 2013 for 6 years of food money, whilst women MPs kept the pension payout from 2012.

Majority reasons women in 50s not in work is due to disability / chronic sick, and those benefits being lost, with either a teeny tiny works pensions or nil other income at all.

    All ages visit food banks.

Working families with £20 left in a week to feed the family.

Old pensioners with less than £11 a week to feed themselves. Followed an old pensioner the other week out the supermarket with 4 very small items of food that were not even two handfuls of food.

    The starving are all ages.

But there is a group that may indeed lose all vouchers to food banks altogether. Those sanctioned off benefits or losing them altogether, by the pension changes leaving women especially with absolutely nothing. Some agencies are not giving out permission to gain a voucher to a food bank to someone not on benefit, as are the social supermarkets starting up who are only for those on benefit.

Thank you for your detailed response. I am a state pensioner with extra modest pensions paid for when I was teaching. I don’t live in the lap of luxury but I have sufficient to get by. My house has no mortgage and I do not have any other regular payments to meet, other than council tax, energy bills, telecoms bills, etc.
I have a full lifetime pension entitlement. For those wo/men who do not, this must mean their income level is very much lower than mine.
It is obvious that this country should be increasing the level of state pension and other welfare benefits, especially as it is the world’s sixth wealthiest country.
If the coalition government think it is OK to give the UK’s 300,000 richest people tax cuts then it should also be OK to increase and improve welfare benefits too.
Will a Labour Government commit to helping the poorest in society, I wonder?
Incidentally, I heard the woman tory councillor involved being interviewed on Radio 4.
Her “source” of information appeared to be just one example, from which she has spun out all this controversy. Of course, the mass media may have been some help to her and the lib/con coalition in shifting the blame for their poverty on to the “feckless” poor and working class of our once great country, I suppose?
