Better than Nothing? – Smiling Carcass

minimum-wage-poverty

“We’re in that ‘better than nothing’ mode, aren’t we?” writes Smiling Carcass in his blog.

“Where we’re happy to accept changes to the Bedroom Tax rather than continue the fight to abolish it.

“Just as we’re happy to accept lower than inflation wage rises.

“Where have we left our guts? When did the unions begin to sit in the pockets of government?”

Are we?

Are we happy to accept changes, rather than the complete abolition of the Bedroom Tax? This writer isn’t!

Are we happy to accept lower-than-inflation wage rises while bosses of FTSE 100 companies take all the profits for themselves? This writer isn’t!

And have the unions really become government poodles? If you’re not part of one, there’s only one way to find out: Join.

Once you’re in – if it’s true – you can work on changing it back again.

I have been moaning for a while that union subs are just too high for zhc/mhc and minimum/subminimum waged workers. The RMT has been trying to support some of these that aren’t members and now BFAWU have reduced their subs for workers on zero hour contracts to £1.09/wk. But even then it’s still a lot of money for people who have nothing. So neoliberal employment ethics are just reducing union power even more :(
