Charlie Hebdo update: French mosque attacked

Steve Bell’s response to the Charlie Hebdo shootings – ridiculing the attackers because they don’t deserve anything else (yes, there is an expletive and VP usually blacks them out… Not this time).

It’s understandable, but it isn’t the answer.

It seems that, following the attack on the French magazine Charlie Hebdo and the killing of 12 people by terrorists claiming to be Muslims, at least one mosque has been attacked along with other places – in retaliation?

NDTV carried the story: “Three blank grenades were thrown at the mosque shortly after midnight in the city of Le Mans, west of Paris; shots were also fired in the direction of a Muslim prayer hall shortly after evening prayers in the Port-la-Nouvelle district near Narbonne in southern France.

“An explosion at a kebab shop near a mosque in the eastern French town of Villefranche-sur-Saone on Thursday morning also left no casualties.”

This is, of course, exactly what the terrorists wanted. Terrorists always want to set people against each other, for the wrong reasons. The vast majority of Muslims are likely to have been as horrified at the terror attack as everyone else – but what are they supposed to think, now that innocent Muslims are being attacked by idiots?

Here’s the real voice of Islam, in the words of Vox Political commenter ‘Nightentity’ yesterday: “Those that believe these so-called Imams are ignorant of their faith and will believe anything they hear that makes them seem intelligent and all knowing to the other ignorant [people].

“Terrorism is not Islamic, you don’t cause suffering to the aged, the weak and the innocent, you don’t hide behind masks and scarves, you stand like a man and fight a man’s battle. These terrorists are cowards and weaklings for they hide behind a faith that does not condone what they do.

“These terrorists are only out for power and control, they are not true Muslims in any sense of the word.” [Bolding mine]

Meanwhile, the world’s political (and other) cartoonists have responded to the attack. Here’s Lew Stringer:

And Uderzo, the artist responsible for Asterix cartoons, paid respect to the deceased:

Here in the UK, cartoonist (and friend of Vox Political) Martin Rowson responded to the atrocity in a Guardian comment piece. Under the headline We must not stop laughing at these murderous clowns, he wrote: “We’re very, very good at laughing at those who place themselves above us, either as our leaders or intending to impose their beliefs to make everyone else exactly like them. However much they may identify themselves as victims of mockery, those cartoonists’ murderers have clearly also identified themselves as on the side of the power.

“Don’t forget that demanding either respect or silence from everyone else is one of the most common abuses of power going. But don’t fool yourselves that this is about Islam… The British cartoonists’ names filling the Gestapo Death List were just another manifestation, throughout history, of how hateful laughter is to despots.

“Which is why, now more than ever, we mustn’t stop laughing this latest bunch of murderous clowns to scorn.”

Come on mike don’t be one of the MSM its a false flag Psi-Op to stir up trouble, its all about divide and rule Machiavellian tactics, while we argue among our selves we don’t see them shafting us.

French President Francois Hollande is on the scene within hours banging on about attacks on free speech, who are these people that want to enforce the lie that we have free speech?

We only have free speech when we are saying what we are supposed to say, if we don’t follow like sheep then we are domestic terrorists, David Cameron said those that speak out but do not promote violence are just as big a threat than those that do, I think he made it quite clear in his speech to the UN that we should not be allowed free speech.

What do you mean, “don’t be one of the MSM”? I’m here pointing out that this attack was carried out by a bunch of lunatics who have no real claim to represent Islam – as shown by the comment from a Muslim in the piece – and that ‘revenge’ attacks on mosques are utterly misplaced. That doesn’t seem to be the MSM line at all.

Mike its a false flag carried out by certain agencies that have nothing to do with Islam so in a way your right, do you not think its kind of coincidental that France have just recognised Palestine as a state and all of a sudden they get attacked? Read my OP again its quite a clear message.

I’m not willing to let people accuse me of joining the conspiracy theorists, so what I said is as far as I’ll go – for now.

Fair enough, just keep your eyes open, MI5 reporting today that the UK is at high risk and of a terror threat and I quote “We wont be able to prevent them all”, Interpol are echoing this, my prediction is the UK will have its own false flag attack in the next few months.

We shouldn’t really laugh at the murderers, it’s not their fault they have small penises and brains the size of a walnut that renders them incapable of comprehending the Wisdom of the Spaghetti Monster (pbuh).

It’s time for the French White community to stop hiding behind a cowardly wall of silence and to speak out against today’s Mosque attack. So long as they remain silent on the matter, the White community implicitly approves of the attack.

Laughter is the only revenge. Of course chop their heads off the terrorists but do not act like they do. Follow the law. The Muslim community has shown they do not support terrorism. As for terrorism Europe has a history of enough home grown terrorism to avoid blaming the Muslims or anyone else.

You’re right about Europe having enough of its own home-grown terrorists. Someone did a study of the number of terrorist groups and the amount of terrorist violence in the world, and despite the current obsession with Islamist terrorism, it’s only a small percentage in amount of overall terrorism around the world. Most of the world’s terrorists are either Nationalists, or Marxist or other political extremist.

We are all appalled by the attack and loss of life but on the same day a terrorist attack happened in the Yemen where 38 people were killed. It hardly made the headlines here. A million people have died in Iraq since the start of the war. If only we put as much anger at the continuing atrocities in the middle east. It’s like our lives are more inportant or have more value than thiers.

I wouldn’t say that. It’s hard to comment on the other incidents you mention without more details. The Charlie Hebdo attack was of note because it was the murder of people whose only offence was that of applying ink to paper in a way that allowed the attackers to claim it offended them. It’s the pettiness of the excuse for the atrocity that makes it so important, in my opinion.

One worrying emergent property is it really does look as if Le Pen is mightier than the sword

While the murders are indefensible, I think we need to acknowledge that the possible reasons for them are not quite as simple as blind religious fanaticism.

Some of the cartoons that have appeared in Charlie Hebdo and that cause offence aren’t just critical of Islam. Some are actually racist, and some are also homophobic. If you look at these pictures…

    http://avantblargh.tumblr.com/post/107422672105

… we can see examples of both racial and gay caricatures.

Like I say, it justifies nothing, but it does put some of the offence felt in a more understandable light. We shouldn’t over-sympathise with the magazine as ‘Champions of free speech’.

    • Mike Sivier January 9, 2015 at 11:52 pm - Reply

Certainly not. As I stated in the first line of my original article about this, I wouldn’t publish the cartoons that allegedly set off the killers because they are offensive to Muslims (and I notice Adam Hills said the same thing on The Last Leg this evening – good on him).

That being said, any offence caused by an ink drawing on paper should not be enough to justify taking another person’s life. It is important to take a balanced view of this issue.
