Labour’s tuition fees cut

Here it is – Labour’s much-anticipated announcement on its plans for tuition fees:

150227labourtuitionfees

For some of you, this won’t be enough. “Labour introduced tuition fees,” you’ll no doubt be saying. “Labour should be getting rid of them altogether.

Clearly the money for that isn’t known to be available at the moment. This is part of a costed plan for all government services, remember.

It’s a step in the right direction, and it will help.

The Conservatives have nothing like it, nor do the Liberal Democrats (it would be hypocritical). UKIP would scrap tuition fees for people from poorer backgrounds, subjecting them to demeaning means-testing, no doubt. Plaid Cymru seeks the abolition of fees when the public finances allow it; the SNP would continue to pay tuition fees itself. And the Greens would abolish them altogether – but have not said where they will find the money to do so.

This is being trailed as a big move for Labour.

Is it?

I think its a step in the right direction – under the Tories the tuition fees will only go in one direction and that’s up.

Due to EVEL I don’t think I’m allowed to comment.

Why not? Just because tuition fees in Scotland are being met by the Scottish Parliament doesn’t mean you can’t have a view on the Conservative and Liberal Democrat government’s imposition of them, or Labour’s plan to cut them down.

As has already been said, its a good start in the right direction. Left to the nasty Tories education will once again be confined solely to the wealthy.

Yes, it’s a step in the right direction.
But I would class education as the biggest priority, even over the health service.
Stop using education as a political football (including the NHS) and reduce class sizes to be as small as possible, have a clearway forward from nursery to University/Apprenticeships.
Also note that not everyone wants to go to University, some would benefit from vocational education, like learning a trade etc…
This is where a good careers and guidance service comes in.
It’s funny how governments over the past 30 years can spend millions on vanity projects and wars but not on our future, hmmmm.
I just hope that what you say about Labour moving away from neo-liberalism is correct.

If the Liberal Democrats offered it-none of the students would believe them.
