You have to decide what you want and how you are going to win an election…The Labour Party was founded to protect the workers and those unable to protect themselves but as a nation we have changed and become more selfish and that’s why the Labour Party lost the election.Andy Burnham is caught between a rock and a hard place because he has the hostile unions leading him around by the nose…his so called expertise on the NHS is flawed and he will always be associated with NHS failure in Mid Staffs on his watch.Yvette Cooper isn’t blameless but she doesn’t have the same baggage as the Burnham camp and has the advantage of being an experienced fearless performer in the Commons and would be the first Woman Leader of the Labour Party….Unless Keir Starmer decides to stand I think Yvette Cooper is the best option and if the unions want to cast Labour adrift…so be it.At least nobody could then blame labour of being the lap dogs of the unions.Its time for change in the Labour Party or oblivion.
Why would the unions be hostile, if not because Labour had abandoned its reason for existing in order to follow the claptrap espoused by the right-wingers?
Have you checked the facts on Mid Staffs? Once the data was checked and re-entered, it became very hard to identify any undue deaths. Oh, and the story about patients drinking out of vases? There weren’t any vases on the wards.
That being said, I think that myth will follow Andy Burnham because people will prefer it to the facts.
I’m not convinced by Yvette. I can’t quite put my finger on the reason why. Because she’s married to Ed Balls and he was a blight on Labour’s economic policy?
Have to say I’m both surprised and heartened by your response to Steve Grant, Mike . Agree with you wholeheartedly – if Labour had adopted even those left policies that had clear public support and had made the anti-austerity case from 2010 onwards, they would have won this election with or without Scotland. I’d like to hear more about your view of Andy Burnham though – his initial statements (as reported by the BBC of course – so not necessarily a fair representation) seemed a bit soggy to me. The media also seem to be portraying him as a “moderniser” – your characterisation of whom I also agree with ;)
Burnham’s looking like the best of a bad bunch to me. I liked him as shadow health secretary, but I do have reservations about his attitude to some issues, especially his interest in business leaders over the real wealth creators – the people who do the actual work.
Agree wholeheartedly with your reply above Mike – and heartened by it. If Labour had committed to even those “left” policies for which there was demonstrable support, and argued the case against austerity from the start of Ed Miliband’s leadership they would have won this election with or without Scotland. I’d like to hear more on your views re- Andy Burnham because I thought his opening comments as a candidate were rather soggy ( as filtered, of course, but the BBC – which is hardly reliable any more I’m afraid) – and the media seem to have him down as a “moderniser” – your charecterisation of whom I also agree with!

The context of the word “modernize” is never defined so that we know exactly what is meant by it..
You have to admit it’s being bandied about in terms of right-wing change, though.
